I'm trying to research a boat built by A.J MacFarlane in 1917 in SA.
Where do I start ?.

Wooden Boat Association of South Australia
Quack Flats - probably best if you ask for Ted, but ask whoever and they'll put on onto the most likely source of mis-information.
There's no contact for this mob that I know of, but the Armfield Slip at Goolway is one of those weekend, volunteer mobs that restores old boats. Go for a drive to Goolwa - it's between the yacht club and the bridge.

The Signal Point interpretive centre at Goolwa might have a contact person for Armfield's slip.
The other crowd are the Woodenboat Association of SA - some of whose members might have real or imagined ideas about the boat!
President Alex has his email address on this page

Also the South Australian Maritime Museum might have info in their filing system.
The National Maritime Museum in Sydney has started to put together a historic yacht register that was being developed by David Payne. You could give them a call.

Rob, just google it and you will get some leads.

There was a McFarlane that operated the slipway that Axel Stenross took over.
So... there is a museum for Axel Stenross - they might have info too.

MIK , what I know so far is that the boat was built by Jack MacFarlane at Birkenhead Port Adelaide for Cain Rumbelow at Victor Harbour in 1917.
Her restoration was started in the late 80s or thereabouts by Noel Doepel , when he was building "One and all".
She is registered as "Swallow" now , a gaff ketch , I don't know what she was launched as.
But I'll check out the leads tonight , thank you boys !.

Is that David Bamford's Swallow, Rob?
If so, I thought that David had done quite a lot of the background work.Cheers

Yes , it is Davids Swallow.
He has done a fantastic job with her , history is fascinating , with a few holes . I'd like to find out more.
The photo of her under full gaff ketch sail , complete with flags , is awesome !.
The photos of her David has sent to me at her lowest , are depressing.
I'd like to know more of the 1917-1980's !.

I don't know how to post photos , all I know is that she is on "yacht hub" , in the 36-40 ft monohull sail section , as a MacFarlane Gaff Ketch.
I have been in e-mail correspondence with David , he seems an honest man , devoted to the boat , I'd just like to know more of her history.
Am i going to buy her ?. Well , I've got Gary Kerr in my corner , and he is telling me to just get out and experience as many boats as possible . He put me on to Greg Blunt , a friend of his , who happens to know the boat , and yes , she is a really nice OLD boat , but its a buyers market , and not to buy anything till I have done a good search and gained lots of relevant experience.
I like the look of Davids "Swallow" , but I'm feeling I'm not qualified to make a decision one way or the other.
But I'd like to research her past , ya never know !

Here is some boatporn showing Swallow.
I know David from The Arthur Ransome Society and can say that in my dealings with him he has been good to deal with. However, I have never bought a yacht from him and that is always a different kind of experience.....Cheers

Yes , David seems to be a really great bloke , who has done some really fantastic work on Swallow.
And he really wants to sell , and move on to the next phase of his life.
I hope he can , because I think he deserves it , and has earned it , he has worked hard on her.
He has sent me a heap of photos , and explanations , and I hope to go and see her in the New Year , if we get rain for Christmas.
I am also listening to Gary , and he makes a lot of sense. And a couple on this forum have posted privately in the past , with good common sense.
The biggest thing against her is that she needs at least 2 to sail her properly , and as David says , thats the ONLY way to sail her (properly) !.
She does look a picture though , to me !.

The "Restricted 21s" were on of the hot racing classes from before WW2 (I think).
There are now fleets of restored ones in Melbourne and in Adelaide mostly in Goolwa. They carry quite a lot of sail and are quite quick.
Most have been restored from very poor condition.
Here is a google search with some links
