Could be. I guess I've just been lucky*. I Googled [vbulletin "remember me"] and got some issues about security, but too much computerese for me to decipher.

    * Although I hear an occasional ping on the speaker during a session. Thought it might be my tinnitus acting up.

Wheelinround, I noticed that you are signed in under the www.woodworkforums.com url and the link you're trying is the www.woodworkingforums.ubeaut.com.au so in theory when you click that link the server says your not signed in. I overcome this by being signed in on both urls

There is no way that clicking "remember me" on this site would cause you to get spam. All your details are kept very securely. All clicking 'remember me' does is put a very small and harmless cookie in your browser. For the sake of remedying the problem do it.
Have a nice day - Cheers

DJ, it still begs the question why there are 2 urls for 1 forum. Considering the hassles that it is creating for people, the question is ................why????

Wheelie - Try this and let me know what happens https://www.woodworkforums.com/f44/own-hinges-tutorial-38077

You will never get spam from this site by logging in. You will get a whole heap of hassles.

Considering the hassles that it is creating for people,
I hear 1 person with a problem, the other couple are fixed and this one might also be fixed by clicking the remember me box. Are there others that aren't speaking up. We get over 17 million hits a month and this is the only thread I am hearing of a problem.

still begs the question why there are 2 urls for 1 forum
There are actually 3 url's www.wordworkingforums.ubeaut.com.au -this is the address we started with 8 years ago and the one that most of the search engines were logging for 6 years so we keep it on - www.woodworkforums.com - the one we use because it's easier to remember, type in, etc and for some reason one that almost anything US based can find easily - www.woodworkforums.com.au - Currently off line but purchased to keep others from using it. But sadly, like a lot of Australian stuff, not recognised by a lot of US organisations or put down because of the .au which slows the site loading etc, all bulldust but none the less.

In theory if you are logged in with remember me there is no problem. If you log into the .com site there shouldn't be a problem as all pages are under the .com banner. Looks like what's happened here id the url set for the above link is set to the old site and I'm sure there are others as well.

Log into both sites with remember me and there should be no problem. At least that's my theory. There will be probably hundreds of cross linked url's and unless someone wants to sign on to find and change them all I guess we'll just have to live with them until we can find another way around the problem.

Still reckon a couple with a problem out of over 850,000 individual users in a month (17,000,000 hits) is pretty good odds. Would like to be that sure of winning Lotto.

Wheelie I hope this solves your problem. Stop being paranoid about the remember me button. NOTHING from this site is transmitted by way of spam, spyware or anything else either to, or from your computer, apart from the cookies that hold the information to let you back in without having to log on, etc. If we were stupid enough to do something like that it would be picked up really quick and we wouldn't have any members logged in or even using the forums.

    Cheers - Neil

I have used remember me in other areas years ago not only does this save information to the server but also your computer this is where accounts are accessed from by hackers that is a fact.

If the worlds best get spam hacked etc forbid it happening here.

Neil that link worked a treat thanks for your patience.

I am more concerned that I am getting spam (although only 1 to 5 daily or when my wifes freind turns her out dated win 2000 machine on) that using remember me can cause problems. I take all precautions as I am sure all you guys do also.

Using Remember Me has been one of the many problems I have found on other peoples machines when diagnosing troubles mainly due to using IE. It can from home machines cause troubles.

I have had other problems with the site but I have noticed that others have had them also of late, Slow to Load, pics not showing, links not working. I guess many who are not computer savy may take this as to hard basket and not complain leave it for someone else to whinge and whine.
With 17 mil hits thats impressive no wonder things slow down but all credit to you and the others who admin this forum it is sorted.

In regards to the last statement Paranoid me nah never (sorry always) but you get like that after years and years, I have always been able to prove my point even if it takes time.
May I remind you not long after joining this forum I posted an web address for my wife spinners group. I had to contact the forum as it was overloaded with hits even sent stats from yahoo showing97% were from this forum. No-one could access it, I was trying to load edit new pages at the time. The problem was solved by the admins of this forum no idea what happened as I never got a reply, it was is a yahoo/geocities site.

Yes but that wasn't spam. That was people looking at the site, this is what happens when you link from a big site that's rated #1 in the world in Google search for woodwork.

Personally I don't really remember it.We have a whole lot of stuff happening here all the time and trying to remember what happened last week is bad enough.

However it probably went something like this: You said there were too many hit and it was causing a problem > I took the link off > end of story.

I'm sorry but like I said we get pretty busy around here and maybe you were forgotten. Maybe there was no response needed, especially if the problem was fixed. I have no idea. Would have been more to the point to bring this up then. Not now.

We all do the best we can and if you don't get an answer of feel you've been overlooked or slighted etc, please PM and ask what's going. Sometimes we just physically don't have enough hours in the day, so things get overlooked or forgotten in the mess that is often a day in the life of a forum admin or moderator.

Don't forget this is all voluntary, we all have full time jobs in the real world and the forums are a secondary thing, that's taken over the spare time we all used to have.

    Cheers - Neil

I am impresed that WWF has more power than Yahoo/Geocities I am not being tongue in cheek after all it is the best forum I have been to with heaps of areas covered.

I did notify straight away it was taken care of the same day which was months ago for that I even sent a personal thank you.

To all the moderators admins for their time if I could I'd shout them all not just drink but meal as well .

I have been in the volunteer chair it seperates you from family freinds and other life.

Again than you for sorting it

Neil, thanks for the explanation. I have in the past logged in to both addresses and clicked remember me. In fact on my Firefox bookmarks bar I have 2 icons for this forum and I can click on either one and the forum doesn't ask me to log in, it knows who I am (which is more than I can say for myself at times).

But......, when the link in a post to pictures is on the other address, all of a sudden that address does not know who I am and asks me to log in.

So, I will try to open both addresses every time I go on the forum and keep them open whilst I am on and see if that overcomes the problem.

    Thanks again.

    Fred
