    Default new bed, progress shots

    Hi Everyone,

I have recently been complaining on this forum that I put myself in a position where I had to make a bed to my soon-to-be-visiting parents.
Now here we are, took a week off work and got started.
The bed is a bit chunky and inspired by the one I already have that I bought at Naturally timber (before the woodworking demon took me...).
The structure is made of tassie oak and the finished bed will have 14 raised panels.
The first picture is the head of the bed taht I completed on the second day (I know I am slow !!!). Second pic was taken teh next day when I finished the structure of the sides. The last pics represent what I have done so far. I am now preparing and gluing the Jarrah panels. I got a great deal at the timber yard for the Jarrah ($3 a meter for 8cm wide flooring) and got 50 meters. I thought I'd have plenty to make the panels and some left to make a couple of night stands... big mistake! the bed is taking almost all of the 50 meters. Am gonna have to get some more for the bed side tables. By the way if anyone has some design ideas for the bedside tables I'd be happy to see. I am also trying to find some concealed fasteners for the sides as depicted in a thread i started on the "General" section. I'd appreciate if someone could tell me where to find that in Sydney.
Next pictures will be with the panels, hopefully very soon.
    Comments and criticisms appreciated...
    Cheers
    Steph

    Hi Steph,

Good work to date on the bed. I like your design. Just out of interest, how will the mattress rest in it, i.e. on slats? If slats, will they be hardwood or softwood and will it have a centre leg?

    cheers

    HI Wendy,

There will be rails on each side first supporting 4 cms thick slats and to provide further support, there will be two long pieces running lengthwise supporting the slats. I have a bed at home that i purchased from naturally timber which is made like that so I decided to copy their way of providing support for the mattress. I hope it'll turn out ok. If you have alternative suggestion, please feel free to let me know, I haven't started to do this part yet.
    Cheers

    Cool Nice

Nice looking Steph. But does (by the pics) this mean that they have to sleep outside next to the house?
In woodworking there is no scrap, only firewood.

Nice work. Just make sure you give the parents plenty of blankets and they'll be fine out in the yard...

    Hi again Dr,

in response to your question, considering that it will be the first time in 17 years that I'll be living in the same house with my parents for three months, they may well end up right outside the garage after three days...... When I go back in France I usually never spend more than a week at my parents' place so I am afraid three months will drive me nuts.... May be I could rent them to some family at some point and make a buck out of it....
What an ungrateful son I am.... lucky they can't speak English for crap...

Just trying to help out, and get in the will!

    Hi Stef,

That sounds like a good way of supporting the centre of the bed. What timber are you going to use for the slats?

I can't offer any experience, but just happened to be reading something about beds where they said that queen/king beds without a centre support with softwood slats voided the mattress warranty, hence my questions. It was an American magazine, but I thought these two points made a lot of sense.

    cheers
    Wendy
