    Default Blackwood writing table

Inlay comprises Indian Rosewood, Huon Pine and Rock Maple strips. Drawer pulls Indian Rosewood. Started 22 June 2006 and finished today. Phew!
Drawers designed to take a laptop computer.

    Hi Ozeb,
Nice work on the table, inlay esp. looks good, and I like the tapering leg profile!

    Cheers,

Inlay home made. See photo of it being sawn up into slices. The thin rock maple (the bread of the sandwich) was thicknessed to 1mm on my planer/thicknesser by glueing each end to a base of particle board. I have a mill/drill which is great for machining the blocks of Indian Rosewood and Huon.
Top finished with Cabots Gelclear with Danish Oil on top rubbed with steel wool. The rest just has Danish Oil. I'm not that confident with finishing and would love to get my hands on some wiping polyurethane! However, I'm fairly happy with the result so long as I don't look at reflections in the top (which my wife does).
Drawer bottoms 3/8" blackwood. Drawer slides 1/4"x1/4" solid brass. I tried commercial nylon slides but they were worse than useless. The fancy ones used in kitchen drawers don't look right for this.

Excellent, uncomplicated lines, great choice of timber, and IMHO you've chosen the right sort of finish. Well done.

Thanks for the nice feedback guys. Unfortunately for me, it is a gift to my goddaughter and so I will not get to enjoy it, except in the giving!

Of course you will. When you visit, you will have to spend time reading the forum, so just borrow her laptop - you know where she keeps it

It is a really great table. I was interested to see you cut the inlays by hand - is there a specific reason for that?

I don't have a bandsaw or fretsaw. I used a Japanese saw with a fine kerf. My workshop is half a double garage and the major machinery is a metal lathe, a mill/drill and a planer thicknesser. No saw bench, just a jigsaw. Not much room for anything else.
