Camphor jewelery box
I got some Camphor wood at the Melbourne show the other week and decided to use it for a gift for a mate's other half (I missed thier engagement party a month ago). The box is dovetailed and the small trays use finger joints. It is finished with Tung oil, waxed and then buffed. It has a fantastic grain pattern but tears out quicker than you can look at it and has left its characteristic smell in the workshop. Will this smell keep the mossies away? If so I will need to open up the dust collector and salvage the shavings.
Regards
Mike

Hi Mike,
The box looks great and you are right about the grain, it does have a fantastic pattern. I'm sure the receiver will appreciate the time and effort you have obviously put into it.Have a nice day - Cheers

Hi Mike,
Firstly, a very nice box!
Secondly, I also bought some Camphor wood, but haven't yet used any. You mentioned that it's prone to tear out - is than when cutting the D/Ts or when planing?
BTW, are the D/Ts hand cut or did you use a jig and/or router?
Cheers!

Steve,
The grain seems to go in all directions and so only used the plane sparingly, the dovetails were cut using Mr Gifkins excellent jig and most of the finish work was done with a sander. There are a couple of places where the tear out that occurred was quite deep but I have used these bits that don't show too much.

Mike

Amazing grain, and a great design.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.
