    Default Dresser for bubba

My latest project, a decent set of drawers for bubba.
Used some rough sawn timber I found behind the hay barn under some old corrugated iron.

    Default A confession

Have managed to not start any new projects this week, but carried on some more with the dresser.

First off a confession about the timber, which has turned out to be a bit of a dog's breakfast really, there's a bit of a story involved so ...
It all started quite a while ago.
The farm on which I work has a reasonable quarry, the farm owner and his Nephew bought an old crusher of sorts and started a wee metal supply business. Long story short, the Nephew's P habit didn't really go hand in hand with running a business, and it all fell over, there was a half dozen unfinished projects left all over the place. P really is a terrible drug, don't go near the bloody stuff.
Anywho, while I was poking around I spotted some decent sized slabs of timber laying around which I decided was Totara and Macrocarpa, I also found some undressed 6 x 1 stacked behind the hay barn, which I thought was also Mac (I turned out to be wrong on that count) I asked the farm owner if he'd be willing to do a bit off a deal on all of it, he said "sure thing" and I got all excited.
Well first problem I found was the Totara was chocka full of worm, next was the Mac had been left out in the weather too long and is all split and warped. So I thought, oh well at least I still have the 6 x 1, but after the first cut with the chainsaw I realized it was pine. "SIGH" I talked to the owner again and he was a bit confused as to where the pine came from and then remembered that they'd cut down some old gummy pines years ago and that must be it, I questioned him about whether it had been treated and he said it definitely hadn't. I decided to go ahead with the dresser project using the pine as it was only for the kids. When I dressed it however, I found it to be the weirdest looking pine I've ever seen, it's got an unusual colour and weird grain.
I used a bit of it for the space shuttle and as soon as I oiled it it went as green as, just like it had been treated.
So I found myself making a nice cabinet using treated pine.... wow, how exotic, it really made me a bit depressed for a week or two, and I almost gave the project up.
So that really put a spanner in the works, but after all the work I'd put in I decided I may still be able to salvage it and have decided to stain the dresser a darkish walnut to hide the green colour and slap 2 or 3 coats of poly on her to make it safe . I'll get some untreated pine for the drawer sides.

Now, my new saw is terrible for ripping nice clean edges and I can't afford a router for the moment so I've ended up ripping it into 50mm strips, thicknessing them and glueing into panels, I put an arice between each join to hide any inconsistencies and although it sounds rough and ready it's actually come out looking real nice.
Yesterday I ripped up the top, i'll biscuit and glue it up after I've finished this post.
As you can see in the photo, it really is interesting looking pine, but it certainly doesn't look treated(or smell like it either) is there another reason why it would go green do you think?

No idea about the green colour, however personally if I had any sort of inkling that I was using treated pine for my child, I would junk it.

Can't be too careful with children.

Can you use it for anything else?

I guess I am also interested to find out why it would turn green.
