    Default Earlier Project

Here are some images from a project I did in year 10. It's an "asian-style" table, made from Radiata Pine.

I was pretty happy with it. Only disappointment was the finish. I used the same finish all over, but the colour varied. The end grains all went very dark, and the top had a wavy sort of appearance (this was caused by the fianl sanding with an orbital sander, where the wood went 'bumpy', and I'm still not sure why)

The drawers haven't got any runners attached, as they open from both ends (go all the way through)

Its not very heavy, I can easily lift it on my own.

What do you guys think? Keep in mind I was only in year 10 when I did this.

Oh, and apologies for poor quality pics.

Generally I like it specially through draw idea

Looking at the end grain it wasn't planed or sanded back enough, still see the rough saw marks or possibly the end seal as well. The top looks like it was not gone over with a plane or made flat, an orbital sander would make swirls yes but not bumps/waves .

Thanks. I just thought my lack of experience made through drawers the easiest option. All I had to do was make the case and then the drawers (essentially boxes)

Yeah, I think you're right. I didn't cut the ends after I got bought them DAR. So the end grain was as it came.

Possibly. I never noticed the bumps until I used the orbital, and then when I put the stain on it was emphasised.

A philosophical suggestion Powerb; think of all jobs as 'works in progress'.

I did my share of projects in high school and was pretty pleased with them back then. Nearly 50 years later, some of them have made their way back to me. Now I can see the mistakes I made at the time and have dismantled, stripped, repaired and rebuilt so that now they are 'nearly finished' and I'm happy with them and they are being used again. I often do that with jobs although it usually doesn't take that long.
If you can manage to hold onto your work for any length of time you will see that your original design was fine but just needed a couple of small modifications in the construction and finish. You can go back to a WIP job at any time to remedy those.

Good job well done, I recently picked up a coffee table on verge pick, took it home stripped it sanded it got rid of all the factory resemblance. Now the finnished product looks like a very well made coffee table built from pine pallets. Ain't it wonderful what you can do. I like your table and the finnish its my taste I suppose. Any way keep up the wood work. Look forward to seeing more.

@burraboy: My first aim will be to fix up my current project, and add a few things. After that, I might give this coffee table a fixing up. I like the way you thin though!

@peteandoreen1: I like what you've done to your table aswell, looks good I like the colour of my table, its just the ripple affect is a bit offputting.

    First attempt pretty good.

I think you needed more hand sanding.

Yes I can hear you saying more sanding. Yep that's right more sanding. I like it simple design and when you are under pressure to complete something during class it does get a little hard to spending heaps of time sanding.

Yeah, with 6 periods a fortnight, some 60mins, some 75, its hard to get much work done. Because by the time you get setup, and then you have to spend 10 mins at the end packing up, you don't have all that much time!
