Entertainment unit 8 months of work
Here are a few photos of the entertainment unit which I have just finished. Timber is nightcap wattle (close relative of blackwood). I milled all the timber including the hoop pine draw sides. I cut all the veners myself on the bandsaw followed by difficult glue ups and hours of sanding. (Venered pannels on the ends and internally, rest is solid wood.) Cabinet is 2.5m long!. Note the curved legs, figure going through both draw fronts and bookmatch panels on doors. Your comments (positive) appreciated - also just for interests sake - Whats it worth?

Fab looking unit. I was wondering looking at the photo before reading the post, taking note how nice the timber was and that it was probably black wood.
A family heirloom for sure. Show it off with pride.

Nice lowline irwing.
Was the veneering done to stretch the available matching timber or as a weight consideration? I have been thinking of building a similar piece and was wondering if veneering onto ply would save weight.
Whats it worth? Hourly rate + timber + artistic supplement
local hourly rate > imported hourly rate
local timber cost > imported timber cost

veneering
Veneering was done because the design did not lend itself to solid timber. I would have done a frame and pannel construction on the ends if I was to use solid timber. Yes big saving on the amount of timber you use when veneering. On the advice of those in the know I used MDF as the substrate, lot cheaper than ply plus it is purpose designed to be extreamly stable - perfect for veneering. Weight was not a consideration.
Love reading your coments, I so value the opinions of people who also do this kind of thing.
Cheers

Lovely looking piece of work. Love it. Although as in other peices I have seen with the curved legs like that, I want to reach in and put the inward curve further up the leg
Love the style and the way you have matched the timber. Was it your own tree it came from?

Very nice piece, no idea what its worth probably 2K up. I've been thieving (researching?) ideas for a simpler low line for eldest daughter and that seemed to be the prcing on anything in real timber and reasonable build quality.
I like the curves and proportions it all works in nicely.

I built one very similar to yours a couple of years ago. Mine also has curved legs and I got idea from the AWR mag.
A friend once asked me how much I could make her one for. I quoted around $2,500. It would be $4,000 in a gallery.Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

Even at $4,000 I still think that is good value for money.

You are not wrong there. Take away the cost and you are paid $20 - $30 per hour.
Sadly, some buyers don't see it that way.Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

Gee! your doing alright to still come away with $20 - $30/hour.
You could make a living with that kind of money. That is until the bills start arriving

looks beautiful, I really like the book matching on the drawers.
What's it worth - unless someone with a lot of taste and appreciation orders it that way then unfortunately it's only worth what the uninformed public will pay which is an insult.
If made to order for the right type of client $2500 would be my estimate.

Great job irwing! i've always loved the lowline designs for their unobtrusiveness and low center of gravity, wouldn't mind putting my hi-fi setup on something like that!
Seen a few lowlines like this for around the $3000 mark, but most of them were MDF sprayed with thick enamel, so i'd guess around $3500-$3750 for this beauty.
