Figured hall table
Hi all,
I had some sensational looking figured maple (about 95% sure it is but happy to be corrected) that was sitting in my workshop just begging to be used.
I didn't have enough for anything big, so I decided to make a small side table. I don't get much workshop time these days so something easy and fun like this was just what I was after.
I didn't work to any plans, I just sort of made it on the go. I'm happy with the proportions but will need to trim the top.
A few things I did learn on this project were:
1. I need a good workbench. I have the timber and vises but not the time. I've almost considered buying one temporarily until I get a solid 2 weeks of consistent shop time.
2. Helical heads in jointers/thicknessers make working with figured woods very easy.
3. Sometimes building something for yourself makes woodworking all that more enjoyable.
I did take some WIP photos if anyone is interested.
I still got to plane/sand, make the buttons to attach the top and ofcourse apply the finish.

Re: Figured hall table
Here is the finished table. I still got to apply one more coat of finish but I'm reasonably happy with this piece given the minimal amount of timber I had to work with. I would have liked more figure in the legs but there wasn't enough!
I'll get some WIP up soon.

The finish really brings out the figure. Well done on the table.

Whoa! That is one beautiful piece of furniture Andy! Excellent work - simple lines allowing an extraordinary piece of timber to be celebrated. IMO, figure on the legs would be too much and take away from the whole impact. A good photograph should have a central point of attention - without distractions - so should fine furniture.
Was there a slight bulge in your apron as you applied the very first pass of oil on that figure?

That's beautiful, Andy. I like the look of the Livos Oil. The timber does seem fairly pink for Maple though. It looks like some of the Jarrah I've been getting lately, but I guess it's not that heavy.
Great design and finish.
Regards,
Rob

Re: Figured hall table
Thanks for the feedback. I've been walking past the table over the last few days and I now agree that the simple grain in the legs looks quite elegant and brings your attention to the stunning figure on the top.
I'd like to build another one with a drawer, but firstly it's time for a workbench.
It really frustrates me when working on my current bench as I can't use my hand tools to their full potential. I've been meaning to build one for a while and infact I purchased the vices last year, but it's now time.
