    Default Japanese picture framed

10 years ago we spent 4 months in Japan and after endless hours (no, wait, "days") of shopping SWMBO picked out this print which she thought exemplified many things Japanese. SWMBO has regularly asked me to frame and hang it in our bathroom but I could never quite find the right timber for the frame, well that was my excuse anyway. The other day I was sorting through my scraps and came across a gnarly twisted bit of softwood that was part of the packing crate for the Swedish Dishwasher we bought last year. I was just about to throw it out when it spoke to me!!! "I will be your japanese frame," it said, in a sort of Japanese woody accent. So after a bit of resawing and mucking about, shattering bits around the knots, cursing etc, I was down to just a few bits and wouldn't you know it I cut the last set of mitres the bloody wrong way on the sides!!!!!

I was just about to toss the whole lot into the bin when the following design hit me. SWMBO is thrilled and thinks it is all part of the 10 year plan. Still have to fit glass and mount it. I'm quite pleased with the finish, 3 coats of Sponsors product wax.

    Love it Bob!

Reminds me that her bloody highness has this really seriously old silk map of the world (including such places as Siam) inherited from her great grandmother who inherited from her great grandmother who... well way way back... that she has been screaming at me to frame for ooohhh since forever I like you just havent found that peice of timber that whispers in that sexy oriental type woody voice "Im the one!!" so its still in the cupboard waiting and will go on waiting till I find it.

I shall not show her this thread... but it looks just right mate

That frame looks perfect for that print, and such a good use a 'stuff-up' (should call it divine intervention perhaps). The timber is really nice too.

Interesting print -- Big Brother at the laundry? Can you translate the japanese text?

    Thanks Zen,

The Japanese characters on the top in the actual print are I think the title of the print. (something like "a day at the bath house" - I'll have to drag out the certificate - see below). The characters on the side are stamped rather than printed and are I think something related to the authenticity. The print is from a numbered set and comes with a small (A6?) size certificate which includes an english translation. I'm now thinking about framing the certificate and hanging that alongside the print. I'll need to go scrabbling in the junk wood pile again.

Great design modification Bob. Really suits the print (which is nice too). I think the stamped symbol on the side is the artist's "chop mark" equivalent to his signature.

"Chop", that's the word I was after. I have one too somewhere and was thinking I might use it as a makers mark for wood work projects but for all I know it might stand for "Foolish Talentless Gaigin"
