Default My first Jewellery box - WIP

Tuesday morning, I decided I had been putting off wood working (against my better judgement) too long so dived into the workshop.

Here is my work so far (about 4 hours Tuesday and 3 hours yesterday)

I am planning on this being a Chirstmas present for one of my sisters. (yes I know it's late but we are not seeing them till mid Jan!)

Still need to polish/stain/shelac (still deciding which - suggestions anyone?) and line it with velvet and get a mirror.

    Comments Welcome.

Making something hand made as a gift is one of the best presents you can give someone. I am sure your sister will love the gift knowing the thought and efforts that went into making it.

    Well done.

Well, that's the theory anyway, and I hope that you are right.

I've been making all of our major gifts to friends and family for the past 4 years; Christmas, birthday and wedding presents.

I often wonder whether people are thinking, "Why can't this cheap sod just buy something?"

    DPB,

I only make things for people who I love/respect and who I know will appreciate my efforts.

The rest I buy gifts or give vouchers. In that way neither party is disappointed.

They obviously do not realise how damned expensive wood is or the other little bits and pieces you add to them (brass hinger/locks/knobs/etc.).

A large piece of furniture using 'cheap' pine can easily set you back $150 for the wood alone not to meantion the odd $30+ for stain/polish.

One thing I can say about my pieces though - baring major accident/fire they will still be around in 100 years - can you say that about pallet packed furniture?????
