    Default A present for Mum

The coldest winter of my life was the summer in Germany! That's why I'm going to give up the sauerkraut and sausages and -off back home for six weeks...

That's right! Between the end of June and the beginning of August, I'll eating Mum's roast, fish'n'chips, and anything that'll fit in a Webber. I don't know if I'll be able to get the brown ale you blokes think is beer down me throat, but if Mum's fridge is cold enough and I bypass me tongue, I should be alright...

Anyway, since Mum's a bloody good host (and knows how to stuff a leg of lamb full of garlic using a knitting needle), I decided to show my appreciation by way of the workshop:

This is a.....round wooden thing that looks nice. Got a bit of an Asian flair to it which is good 'cause Mum likes that. She can put something on all three levels because the top inner-ring is fixed - but I'll get to that later...

This is how it looks with the door open:

This the dowel pin that recesses into the leg when you turn the outer ring to the right:

    Attachment 24177

This is the recess in the top of the door. When you turn the outer ring to the left, the pin cams the door closed and locks it:

This is how it looks closed:

Anyway, I hope Mum likes it otherwise meat won't be the only thing that ends up in the Webber....

A very cool piece. I like the gridwork theme, and the inscrutable locking mechanism.

What's the timber and the finish?

    Thanks guys (+ girls),

Wongo: You're glowing. And I love the grid thing. I had a special template made up recently which makes making it a snap. They used abrasive water cutting on a 10mm thick 600 x 500 mm stainless steel plate. Can't say too much about it - top secret you understand...

Zenwood: I have to get it down to Oz first. It's solid beech and I want to see what the climate at Mum's does to it first. Might need a bit of filling and sanding. Then I'll see which way Mum is leaning on the sealing and finish...

Hi Zed. Not bad, not bad...

I prefer the Augustiner weissbier. Theres a lovely beer over here called Tegernseer Hell. Tastes so good you can drink it warm on a cold day. Simply delicious. I start talking loud and loving everybody after about 5 or 6 and go to bed between 8 and 10. Never had a headache off the stuff.

No preservatives in the local stuff. Reinheitsgebot and all that...

Geez, I'd love to be your Mum for a minute too Damien. That is one very sweet little unit.

I hope it travels well, oh and you too

Great work Damien. I also like the grid pattern.

I noted the jigs that you'd made to build this, and the end result is very nice indeed!
