Picture frames
Hi all,
Just finished making 4 pictures frames from some old Hoop Pine tongue and groove wall boards. I have a series of photo's of the "Longest wave" taken at kirra looking towards rainbow bay that I intend to mount in them.
Any ideas on how i should finish them
cheers
Michael.

Hoop pine comes up well with either an oil finish or shellac finish.
Do you have a scrap of hoop left over? Any chance you test a couple of finishes to see what will give the pictures the added omphf you are looking for?
Shellac - I personally recommend UBeaut's White or Hard Shellac and then Traditional Wax
Oil - Danish oil would probably be my choice for an oil.
cheers

Hi Wendy,
I have never used shellac before but I have always been meaning to try it. Any tips on applying it. I have plenty of hoop pine left that i can try it on.
Cheers

The White Shellac is very easy to apply. UBeaut's White Shellac is available from Carbatec in Brisbane. They should also have UBeaut's Book of Finishing as well.
You'll also need some pure Metho - as pure as you can get. At a minimum, the Diggers brand isn't too bad.
A container for mixing the Shellac and Metho (don't forget to label the container with the date and what the mix is inside)
You can brush it on, but I reckon using a rag or rubber (described in UBeaut's book) is much easier.
Very basically, the process is sand the piece, clean the dust off, apply a light coat of sanding sealer, lightly sand and clean again, get the Shellac equipment ready, apply the Shellac, let it dry, sand lightly, apply more Shellac coats and when you and the project are ready, give it a polish with UBeaut's Traditional Wax.
Obviously there is a lot left out - don't want to overload you too much at this stage.
Cheers
Wendy

Finished Frames
Hi All,
Well I have finished the frames and finally hung them on the wall. I used danish oil, 2 coats. It brings out the deep golden colour of the hoop pine. Do you think they need polishing with waxed to make them shine a bit more.
Cheers
Michael
p.s. the photo's are a series of shots of rainbow bay.

I think they look fine. you could wax them if you wish but I think I would leave them as they are. Nice work.
Reality is no background music.
Cheers John
