Project 1 - Kitchen Table
Hello fellow woodies, this is my first post as I have just completed my first serious table project. I am a Fitter and Turner and a Consulting Mechanical Engineer and so wood is not my usual working material.
I welcome comments and any views on the type of timber incorporated as this was started prior to my Gold Strike at the auction at Tree Tops in Northern NSW, where I collected 4-5 tons of primo cabinet timber and slabs that I am still attempting to identify. The surrounds are 100 x 50 from a demolition load I got from my brother and the mid slats are planned down from the lower level slats of the 60 year old banana shed I live in. The red thin mid slats are cuut doen from teh demo load as well. The base is mine, welded tube powder coated antique silver.
I particularly like the darker timber of the surrounds and have sorted some more for the bed project that is next. The table was finished in multiple coats of marine epoxy to fill the numerous holes and grains as well as poly to provide the hard wearing surface.
Hoep you like it.
Have bought myself a Triton and now need a thicknesser to start on the timber stockpile; lots of Silky Oak, Coachwood and Cedar so far - Should have kept buying at the auction - absolute goldmine.

Justrite,
It is looking good, for now, at least. But I have to say I would be concerned about the possible effects of seasonal wood movement, unless the central panel is floating in a groove in the edging. Otherwise, if the central panel expands, the mitres are liable to be split open.

I think it's a great first go! Fantastic in fact.
Take on board what rocker has to say though. I'm looking forward to seeing more as your tool collection grows and your skills and experiences grow with it.
Cheers,
P
