Default A secret compartment for the rolltop desk

SWMBO suggested that my rolltop desk really ought to have a secret compartment. So I made three small drawers for the three central top pigeonholes, and made one of the drawers shorter in depth than the rest to allow space for a small box to be concealed behind it. The box, which I made with 1/4" finger joints, using my micro-adjustable box-joint jig, incorporates two rare-earth magnets countersunk from the inside into each of its long sides. A piece of wood with a couple of matching magnets can be attached with a bolt and wing-nut to the back of the drawer to pull the small box out of the pigeonhole. See photos below.

    Default Just curious

Nice work rocker, you have done it again.

You think that huge wing-nut would look better/more secret, at the rear of the draw or will the draw be full of socks etc.

    HJO,

I am not sure I have understood your query. The piece of wood with the magnets, and its wing nut, would not normally be attached to the back of the drawer; it would be kept somewhere away from the desk. It would only be fitted to the back of the drawer when its owner wanted to withdraw the secret box from the back of the pigeonhole.

I love Krenovs approach to secret compartments. He puts them behind an obvious space so you just assume something could be their, but the trick is to work out how exactly do you find it or get into it:confused:

    Echidna,

Secret compartments are not really intended to be somehere where you keep your life savings; they are more of a conversation piece, or a puzzle for an 8-year-old. But this seemed to be a good way of adding a secret compartment as an afterthought.

Agreed, but they were originally created to hold private correspondence or other such papers from other residents of the household - eg spouses so were not intended to be found very easily...

    Lignum,

See my first post in this thread and compare it with the second pic in the first post of http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=34618 . When I have applied the finish to the three small drawers, I will post another picture of the pigeonhole unit with the three small drawers in place.

I think my secret box would be in the Krenov vein, since, unless you know its secret, it is not apparent how to extract the box from the back of the pigeonhole, since there is no way of getting hold of it, short of driving a gimlet into it.

Hmm; I think it would be a brave man, or a foolhardy one, who relied on a secret compartment in his desk to keep compromising correspondence from his wife's eyes.

I agree, but that's exactly what they were originally designed for I believe - or more commonly from the husband's eyes...

Well, yes; but that wouldn't be cricket, would it As I said, secret compartments are not intended to foil determined burglars. You might keep a packet of Viagra in it to spare your cleaning lady's blushes, but you would be unwise to put a 2-carat diamond there.
