I'll have a look later and see how many are like that - i'm tipping if one of them is like that, the rest will be aswell. I did make two batches so fingers crossed.

How important is it to have the grain running into the slot?
The button is just stronger along the grain. I suppose the buttons could crack at the internal corner resulting in the table top coming loose, but I'm sure there are others far more experienced, who can clarify this point.

Good point sloth. A few years back i started this thread on buttons, and how others make them. Some great ideas in this.

Here are some pics of the table inside. Its been sitting inside for a week now, i'll probably wait another 2 weeks before applying the wax.

I think i'll make another one out of QLD Walnut and keep it for myself. I might change the design around a little bit.

I had an opportunity to see this table at Andy's place last week. His photos don't do it justice. It's a great piece of furniture, and amazing for a 1st effort.

    Great work Andy.

    groeneaj,

Lovely workmanship, and proper respect for wood movement.

If you are looking at design change suggestions, I'd like to see the top overhang the sides much more. Maybe 2-3", and tapered from underneath. I'd loose the shelf as well.

    Thanks for the kind comments.

TMC - I know what you mean with the taper on the overhang, I think it looks very nice also.

I'm thinking of making the next hall table as a display table in my house, displaying smaller items such as boxes and bowls (when I eventually learn!!!)

I never really keep the stuff I make, I almost always either sell it or give it away to family or friends. I think it will be nice to have a small collection where I can show people when they come around.

It was really fun posting my progress on the forum and receiving the kind feedback that I did. I'm not sure if i'll do it again with the next one, as it's all been seen before. Maybe i'll take a few pics and post them all up when finally completed?

I'll post a few more pics in a couple of weeks when the wax goes on, and maybe a few pics when it's at mums house.
Mum actually has the first real project I made out of hardwood (made a workbench and a few other things out of plywood and pine before), a blackwood box - https://www.woodworkforums.com/f87/an...st-box-110467/ . I'm prety sure she'll put this on top of the hall table, so it will be first project (the box) with first furniture project (the hall table).

I know it's a little bit late, but I did promise that i'll post a few pics of the table when I delivered it to mums.

The box in the photo was my very first real woodworking attempt, and the chopping board was something I made last year.

I'm hoping for bigger and better things this year in my woodworking hobby. After visiting the Bungendore gallery a few weeks ago, I left there inspired and made it a goal to have one of my pieces in the gallery in the next 12 months.

I know i'm not there yet as far as quality (comparing to the gallery) and I know it's a big call but I think it would give me great satisfaction.
I have a lot of work ahead of me but I believe I can achieve it.

Probably wrote it before, but that drawer pull is nice and subtle and plays off the insert in the top nicely.

If I can ask, what is the height and length?
I make things, I just take a long time.

From memory about 1200 long x 300 wide and about 700 high. I could be off a little bit though
