Default help request re windows startup

I have had 3 virus' on my machine in the last couple of days with the result that services do not load correctly and the machine appears to be restarting loading services or startup programs.

No vius left but damage left behind as Antivir only deleted the virus's and overwrote the log file telling me what they were.
Can anyone suggest a registry repair tool that works preferably free seing as I dont know what damage is done

    OS is win2k now SP4

    Thanks all

    Doug

Have you got all your files backed up. If so I would be reformatting my hard drive. Then get a good anti-virus program like Vet or Kaspersky they will stop any virus getting in. Use Windows XP with Service pack two and use Mozilla Firefox as your browser and Mozilla Thunderbird as your E-mail client.

Our anti-virus at work decided that part of Win2k was a virus and deleted it - server down for two days and heaps of mail on the day missing in action. A few very red faced IT guys worked the weekend to sort it out.

    Doug,

You might try clicking Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.

Follow the prompts here and you can select a restore point to take the system back to. This will give you an older (hopefully working) copy of the registry & some other critical files. Try the nearest available restore point and work your way backwards if necessary. Worth a try. If this doesn't work, reformatting your hdd is the only sure way.

    Cheers,
    Keith

Doug, you could try http://www.winguides.com and download the trial of Registry Mechanic

I'm not sure that's the problem you're suffering, but it's as good a place as any to start...

Sorry Keith, W2K doesn't have system restore points. Unless you do a registry backup (along with other sys files) you're on your own...
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

You can try just reloading windoze over top of your existing install. 50/50 that the machine will work afterward.
If that doesn't work I usually take the disk out of the PC, slave it into another machine and back up all the user files, then format and reload everthing.

Sometimes you can waste so many hours trying to fix virus damage and still have a flakey PC, when blowing everything away and reloading gives you a nice clean system in less time.

I have found this site to be quite useful for optimizing the running of my laptop with windows xp pro.

    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
I try and do new things twice.. the first time to see if I can do it.. the second time to see if I like it
