    Default Old Household Kero tanks

Anyone know what thickness steel these were made out of. I'm thinking of trying to scrounge one to cut up for making a gun cabinet - I need 2mm thick steel.

    Cheers

I don't think you would find one now that isn't just about rusted out. They were only made from black steel and they used to rust out from the inside from condensation.

I would have a look in the phone book under Steel Fabricators and they may have off cuts from jobs. Failing that try One Steel or Steelmark.

I am guessing that you have the regulations that dictate the manufacture of a gun cabinet in WA.

Just in case you don't -
    http://www.slp.wa.gov.au/statutes/regs.nsf/3c0405a7241b5fe648256810003b1b1d/ed9d5e35e1f54e8848256f83001c3e99/$FILE/Schedule.doc -
go to the end of the schedules, schedule 4.

It only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth.

    Hei Robert,
Thanks for that - I got it off the cops website last week. 2mm steel seems rather pointless since I could make something stronger out of timber.
I may go round a scrap yard and see what I scrounge.

    Ahem...

I have one of these tanks outside, standing against my side fence.

I had to detach it from the wall when the bobcat came to flatten out the yard.

There was some stuff still in it, and the heater that was attached got turfed when I bought the place. The tank is in good nic.

It's yours if you want it LOL

edited: not sure if it is kero or oil...

    How far south are you?
As Joe was saying, they are probably 1.6mm but I may be interested - I mean will the cops be able to tell a 0.4mm discrepancy?
Might have to make a call to a mate in the force and find out.
PM me if you'd rather not give your suburb on here.
    Cheers

It looks like a kero tank will be no good.
I rang the cops today (using the scenerio of buying a 2nd hand cabinet) to see how they check wall thickness if the entire cabinet is seam welded.

The cop I spoke said that if they cannot measure by other means they will make you drill a hole in the cabinet so they can check wall thickness.

I was hoping I could sneak by with the 1.6mm but not the case it seems.

    Thanks anyway though.

    Paul,

Please note I said it may be 1.6 mm, i'm not saying it is definately! Mabe Gemi has a Gem, which is 2 mm or more. Surely you're not too far from Ballajura.

Hi Gemi, hope your renos are coming on OK, havn't seen many posts from you lately.

Point taken Joe, and thinking more about it I can use the steel for other things if not the gun cabinet.

Gemi, I can't get down to Greenbushes but I could collect from Ballajura at a time to suit your father - if it's not too much trouble for him to bring up.
I just PM'd you some contact details.
    Cheers

    Hi Smidsy,

Dad didn't bring his trailer the other weekend.

If you still want it, I am cruising up there on Saturday 23rd, can drop it off as I pass through if you live on the way.

I will be heading back home on the sunday, so if that weekend is no good, you are free to pick it up from Ballajura at a time that suits you.

    Hei Kylie,
No worries about the other weekend.
I never know what I'm doing from week to week so it may be easier for me to collect it from your fathers place.
    Cheers
    Paul
