Most of us know that Mr & Mrs Wood Borer (Rob & Meg) live near the fires.

Depends on your definition of near.

We had two last week, about 10Km's from here, both under control pretty quick.

We still have two pretty big suckers going, these are much further away, closest maybe, 30Km's away the other a little further.

Another real mother molester, supposed to be under control, but looking at the smoke yesterday I wasn't convinced, about 35Km's away.
    Boring signature time again!

35 k's is nothing if the wind starts blowing hard.

Ditto for me, Outback, we could be neighbours. Have had smoke billowing up for a week now, seems like it's just over the fence. Some of our local brigade have been rostered on to attend (not me yet)

It is certainly a bad year for them.

Up here we are are about 6 or 7 Kms on the West side of the big one. I am staying up to keep an eye out for embers.

Thankfully I'm nowhere near them - yet.

I live in leafy suburbia, but one idiot with a butt or match and I'm one narrow block from an inferno, and we have plenty of bush growth to worry about - its been about 8-9 years since the last big fire (its usually a 5 + 10 year cycle, and we haven't had the 5 year burn), and there is a heap of standing dead timber still left from the last one to give it a boost as well as make life hard for the firies.

Wongo lives a bit over half a k from me, and he backs directly onto the bush, luckily most of it is up hill from him, but it could be an exciting summer all round.

Wongo also has a model of Stonehenge behind his place, not too many up there would flick a match.

Default Not near them but smoke haze

I think the nearest fires to us are about 50km away at the Buckland Valley and Benalla - nothing near us at all.

However this morning the smoke haze made for a good shot of the sun over the road. Or of course it could just be a photo of Studleys flooring on my neighbours nature strip.

Keep a good look-out mate, and good luck that the fires don't encroach on your place. Fingers Crossed...

The closest one this year to us has been about 6km...that was over a month ago(alot earlier than usaual)...this fire started in the same area as a fire that came right up to our back door did a few years ago. Luckily they got it under control quickly...needless to say I went out the next day and bought a fire pump anyway.

With the last fire that came through here I did'nt care if the old shed burnt down... in fact as the fire was roaring through and the RFS was jumping over the fence with his hose I suggested he let it burn... but these guys are too good and fully protected anything of value.... Next time I will be fully prepared and wont let that fire anywhere near my new shed:mad: .

With the early start to the fire season this year and it only going to get worse, I reckon anytime we see the volunteers collecting money we should all pony up the doe...I know they are the only guys that every time I see 'em i will make an effort to make a donation. We have been lucky twice but I have friends that lost a lot and would have lost a lot more if it had'nt have been for those volunteers.

    cheers Paul

The sun was red yesterday arvo. Smoke is coming up from fires down in Vic. Thankfully nothing around here yet. No one can remember a bushfire here that ever really threatened any houses but it's very dry.

Depends on what you class as 'near'. I live in suburbia but we had a big fire two days ago that started only a couple of km from my place.

Not near any bush fires but tomorrow is a new day and there is a lot of dry scrub around here, one idiot and a match, deliberate or otherwise

    Default hope

I would just wish anyone that is any where near fires are at the moment that they have the same community spirit and dedication that I have experienced in the past...We owe our place to volunteers

    and will never forget it

    I agree about the volunteers.

Unfortunately because we have just moved up here 3 weeks ago, I can't help the CFA fight the fires until I have gone through the training etc which will be held in January.

We have offered our help and will participate in any way at any time.

To ease my guilt at not being able to be directly involved and to kill a bit of time waiting for embers or the fire, I am thinking of making a red gum and myrtle tray to raffle down at the pub with the proceeds going to the local CFA.
