Talking The "Imperial" veneer tape dispenser

Nothing special, just adhering to the shed code of 3 projects on the go. But I think i am still in breach of the code as its finished....Doh!

Pic 1. is how I would normally store and use the tape .

Pic 2. the innards of a masterful engineering feat .

Pic 3. the finished unit, which reminds of this

Its actually pretty handy as it can be used one-handed, and keeps the tape dust free and hopefully protects it from moisture.

Anyone else got a dispenser they have made? or a commercially available unit?

    ...............off to conjure another project.

I gave up with veneer tape. For my last project I just used clear packing tape. However, don't leave it on longer than needed.

What was the problem you had with the veneer tape?

I use just normal masking tape on one side to get the initial join together nice and tight and lined up (referring to joining book-match sheets).
Then i flip it over and apply a strip of moistened veneer tape along the length of the join.

The good thing about it is that it shrinks when it dries, making the joint even tighter.

Once the tape is completely dry, I then remove the initial masking tape. To make 100% sure I will have tight closed joint when the veneer is being pressed, I open up the join by folding it to a 45 deg angle and apply yellow glue with a small brush along one edge. Close the joint up again and then clamp between two blocks for 15 minutes.

Once dry I give it a light rub with sandpaper and its ready to press up. I do like to scrape most of the veneer tape off, but it is designed so that you can leave it on.
