I can tell you you have essentially no rights. The law says it has to be of merchantable quality, but there is NO mandatory warrantee period or anything.
I found this out the hard way some years back when I bought a computer case, sat it aside for some months, plugged it in dead power supply. Shop didn't want to know, fair trading qld contected tehm on my behalf but pointed out there is NO absolute obligation. In teh end I got $20 back on a $70 case I never got to use.
You may do better with festool if you make enough fuss. Do keep us posted.I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

So you bought second hand, from a friend and not from a reputable store, a couple years old tool and it doesn't work. And now you whinge that the manufacturer doesn't care.
Disgusting IMO that you even wish to bad mouth the manufacturer. Do you expect a lifetime warranty on a tool extending even to those who are not the original purchasers.
You should go back to the seller being your friend who sold you the crap tool instead of whinging about a lack of service of the manufacturer.
Yes the customer is always right but in your case the seller is your so called fiend.
Peter.

having been a part owner in an electronic repair business for a number of years, in most cases warranty is non transferable even if the item is sold within the warranty period not several years later as in your case your problem lies with your friend and not the maker.

If he received it new, and sold it to you as a new item I can sympathise with your disappointment. But like the others have already said, if it is out of warranty you will need to pay for it to be serviced.

Hang on a minute. Seems to me your not reading the post properly. He never said he expected warrantee. What he actually said was he chased down the rep and asked for a few clues and the rep brushed him off.
I've got stuff that's decades old and I've politely approached the manufacturer or agent for info on it. They are at least polite about it and often try to offer whatever info they have to hand. That's called after sales service.
Demanding they fix it is of course another matter.I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

hi guys was a rave about the reps pauls,attitude mainly . the tool doesnt work as it should,thats the other problem!met him local dealer!and rang dealer next day to see if my recollection of events was wrong . he agreed paul was not helpfull, and i believe he just wanted to annoy me , and any company that is not helpfull when you are using there products wont get my custom , hence the post to let others know , before you get involved , hope this is clearer. will pay to get it fixed , but they only catch you once . festool employs him and we get to deal with him up here . perhaps he should get some training ???

In order for us to understand your issue with the guy better, what did you actually ask him for?

bobsreturn2003, there are three religions not known for their tolerance of criticism:
* Catholicism
* Islam
* Festool
I think it would be easier to stare down a ship-load of Spanish Inquisitors, backed up by a plane-load of Hezbollah bomb chuckers, than to avoid the outrage of the owners of green tools.... as long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation. I guess its a function of living up there in Outer Kuranda. Most of us are lucky and are able to deal with reputable authorised dealers of whatever tools takes our collective fancy. I (mostly) always buy my Festo toys from either one of two Tassie dealers and have never had a problem with either. I bought my OF900 router off ePay (a South Australian 2nd hand Dealer) and when I got it, it was missing the 8mm to 6mm collet for the router bits. I rang the guy and explained what was missing and he refunded me part of the purchase price and I went to my local fella and he ordered me the bit.
Now our mate up at Kuranda had a bad experience with a Festo rep and I'd guess he's probably the area rep for 10 thousand other products and the least of his market is also probably Festo. I would have asked him for the contact details of the nearest Festo reseller and talked to them about getting a repair done. I bet even with the cost of a repair job he got a bargain.
A lot of angst over not a lot. Fix it and enjoy the sander, you won't buy better IMHO.
My tuppence ha'penny worth.
