    Default Antrac Lathe

    Hi All,
Arthur and i are off tomorrow to pick up the Antrac (for some reason i keep thinking anthrax....). Bargain? Or Bomb......Antrac Metal Lathe | eBay
I know there are "some chucks and stuff" but past that i have no idea.....
I'm not even sure of the swing, the seller told me it was 200mm, 300 in the gap. Sounds a bit small to me, i am wondering if the center height is 200mm....

The machine was made by Yang machine tools in Taiwan. It is a Mori Seiki copy, Sold as mostly as a Yam, or as a Cadillac or Webb in the states. I have also seen references to them as a cut king(?) Most comments on PM and HSM say they are about as good as it gets out of Taiwan. Thats some comfort.

Here is a link to one in the states. As you can see in the vid they are a bit on the short side for most westerners.....

14" x 40" Used Cadillac Geared Head Engine Lathe, Mdl. 1440, 3 Jaw Chuck, 5C Collet Closer, KDK ... - YouTube

I guess i'll know more by this time tomorrow.....

    Cheers,

Hi Ueee.I had a long hard look at that lathe. Could not find any info on the manufacturer. The bed looks pretty solid. I was nearly tempted to put in a bid. What did it end up going for? If you don't mind me asking!Well done!Simon

    Hey Arthur,

Has the old man got that lump of cast iron home yet or is he still having a siesta on the roadside?

    Well the lathe is home....

    Bargain i'd say...not bomb!

Simon, the cost was ridiculous....a whole $55 more than the Vernier mill, $255. Plus $60 to hire a tandem trailer for the day.

It looks to be 14"x40" plus gap in bed. Metric dials, imp leadscrew. 3hp, 2 speed motor. MT4 T/S, 5 in the head. D1-6 nose, coolant pump. 3 chucks, 2 x 3 jaws, one hydraulic (anyone got a use for that?) both Burnard's. A 4 jaw unmarked, faceplate, couple of live and dead centers. As an added bonus an orphan T/S.....
Bed and base would weigh a little over 1T. The crane set to 1T was definitely overloaded.....

We put it on the trailer with 2 engine cranes without a problem. At this end there was a bit more stuffing around with only the one.

The plan at this stage is just to clean out any muck and get it running. There is some work to be done because of poor painting, like the main drive pulley, runs in the grooves and all.

    Video to come.

    Cheers,

Ewan, that's a lovely set of numbers - not least the price! Well played.
D1-6 is good news; 5 is hard to find. What size is the bore?

Nice pickup. Even if you had to have the bed reground it would still be well priced.

Probably a very high possibility that the taper in the headstock is a 1:20 metric taper not a morse taper... Very common in Taiwanese lathes with the D1-6 spindle....

    Wow, looks pretty good.

The guy selling it must have been disappointed with the price.

Might turn out to be your best lathe.

    Wow!

That's a bargain. I don't really need another lathe but for that price I would have bought it and enjoyed the road trip up to get it!

The bed and headstock look really solid.

    Great purchase.
