    Default Calling all laser cutters

    Sarina Rural Skills Centre

The Sarina Rural Skills Centre (SRSC) has opened its doors to the wider community in a bid to boost local skills in the Mackay region.
The centre's new Community Outreach Program will allow the general public to access the centre's facilities after school and on weekends for personal and business training.
"The centre is a well-equipped engineering, rural skills and computer training facility owned by Sarina State High School," Mr Gurnett said.

    Calling all Laser cutters

SRSC is looking for a laser cutting company willing to supply a small quantity of stainless steel parts in return for a Certificate of Appreciation. This is a chance to help our kids develop additional skills, under the watchful eye of Grahame Collins.

    The Project

Grahame approached me with a small project for the kids involving lathe work, drilling, tapping, knurling etc, and I was only too happy to assist with the design and drawings. It’s a pocket scriber and the part required is a pocket clip. It will be cut from 0.6mm s/s as per the attached drawing.

If you would like the opportunity to assist, Please let Grahame know.

I can't help with the laser cutting, but is it possible to buy clips from a wood turning pen parts supplier?. Alternatively it may be possible to fabricate a clip from stainless wire: measure out a suitable length of wire and oxy the cut ends together to form a loop, then bend it into clip shape so that the wire forms the clip part from two parallel wires meeting at the end, kind of like your part outlined in wire.

I work for a laser cutter and the clip is definitely something we can do but I doubt whether the boss would accept a certificate of appreciation as sufficient currency. Perhaps if there was some free advertising (perhaps on this forum) I might be able to twist his arm?

Thank you to those members you suggested I use an off the shelf pocket clip. I initially went down this path, but couldn't find anything suitable, or could be purchased as a separate item.

If you know of a supplier with something similar to my drawing, please let me know.

Heh, it turns out there's a company in the USA that makes only pen clips:

I don't know what their minimum purchase quantity is though, most likely very high.

Edit: Their home page claims they supply scriber clips too, talk about a specialty niche market company: http://www.idealmetal.com/Default.htm

Doesn't look that far removed from a standard Slimline kit clip, which can be bought separately. I guess they would be a lot cheaper than having a custom design laser cut.
