Motor still need front bearing cap turned, but I needed some bench space, so it is temporarily mounted back on the machine. (Greg it is a 1LA2)

Josh, I didn't realise that your mill had the motor stuck out there...that must put it at 1963 or later. Mine has the motor integral with the base, and my build date was summer 1962.
By the way...I had to re motor the Aciera, so now I have a spare brown boveri two-speed motor (although now I see that both windings are star, so perhaps it could be converted to 240v) the end bell on this motor looks mighty like yours, although it is a foot mount.

That is one hell of a mill. I was wondering what was going on with the angled table at first, but i can see now it would be pretty handy.
Great work you are putting into the resto!

That motor mount is a stylish thing, I like it. You've done an outstanding job with the refurbishment so far Josh. Cap looks good too.
I'm glad I was able to help.

Chiken or the egg??
Greg, That makes me wonder.....
Given the FP2LB pretty much has to have it's motor mounted to the column for simplicity of the drive, I wonder whether a redesign of the FP2 to have a column mounted motor allowed the development of the FP2LB or did the development of the FP2LB result in all FP2's getting a column mounted motor??
I'm going back to the coop for more research, now.
Cheers

That's an interesting question...the FP-1 machines always had their motor perched outboard. The FP-2 up until 1963 (give or take a year) had their motors mounted inside the column, but still driving the aft mounted belt/ chain drive.
I really do not see the advantage in use as the ram extends far enough back as to claim the same real estate as a machine with the motor mounted externally. Certainly an external motor misses the therapeutic benefits of an oil+coolant+swarf bath that the internal motor enjoys in dark, dank privacy. (Actually, for Deckel observers, the internally mounted motor has provisions for oil ingress into the motor bay, and the ventilation is robust enough so as to make the installation a successful one.
Greg, pondering the beauty that is my 1962 FP-2, and considering withdrawing it from sale. It's all part of the service here at The House of Pain™

I have only one question.... where will you ever find another?
On a slightly obscure but related topic, I think we ( well Josh anyway..) have reached the decision to ditch the separate electrical cabinet, the VFD will fit neatly inside the existing frame, and there's really nothing in the electrical box that's needed... maybe power supply to the light on the centering microscope? ( which we don't have.. )
Regards
Ray

I have not found the need yet, but I fear what lies undiscovered, and according to Master Yoda fear leads to suffering, I don't think scraping was what he had in mind, but I will need some master jedi materiel levitating skills to scrape anything but the Y axis. The casting of the bed is 2-3 inches thick in places.
I plumbed in some more of the coolant system, enough to run it, only to find that I do need to get some seals for the coolant pump any way pics:
