HM46 CNC convserion
Hello,
I'm thinking of getting a bigger CNC mill
The largest desktop mill I can find is the HM46
Is it feasible to convert this to CNC?

Hi Chris,
I'm not all that familiar with the HM46, but, I am in the middle of a HM52 CNC conversion, there is a thread on this forum, (search back a few pages) and a parallel thread on CNC zone, I would recommend having a look around on CNCzone.com-Machinist Community Forums - Welcome Page for people who have converted similar sized mills, (RF31? maybe) and see what others have already done. The basic questions to be answered are what sort of precision are you looking for, and what type of work do you plan on doing. I'm replacing all the acme leadscrews with ball screws and using AC servo's with EMC2 and Mesa hardware. That's not the only approach of course, you could retrofit steppers and run something like Mach2.
I'm stopping short of power drawbar's and automatic tool changers, that's getting into DaveJ's territory
Regards
Ray

I think I've read that thread
I am a member on cnczone and have started a build thread.
Precision wise I only need 0.01" I usually used aluminium and I make replacement parts for popular toys. Parts vary in size up to about 200mm x 50mm x 15mm at the moment. I use EMC2.
