New Mill
Hi Gents,
I've just joined the forum and have a question.....
Has anyone had any experience with an RHR ZX50f Mill/Drill? I've just won one on Ebay and I can't find much about them other than that they're a Chinese Machine. I particularly want to know what the motor shaft configuration is as I will have to convert it to a sinlge phase motor when it arrives.
Anyone got any ideas? Cheers, Steve.

G'Day Guy's,
Well I take it from the deafening silence that nobody has come across one of these mills, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see....... Oh! for three Phase

G'day Steve.
The model doesn't ring a bell.
Post a link or picture of the machine.
We might then be able to help.Hooroo.

Hi Steve,
Ditto for me too.
I did a search on your first post to see if it was the same as the HM50 from H&F as most of these are hybrids.
Couldn't find anything for a RHR ZX50f even on the Chinese manufacturing sites so I left it alone.
Tell us what size motor it has as well. You could always use a phase conveter and retain the three phase motor.Cheers,
Rod

G'day Steve.
Look a lot like the mills sold by GASWELD.
Seen similar at their Coff Harbour Store.Hooroo.

Before you trash the three phase motor, have a look at ebay item 7631024590. These inverter drives, or VFD's, are great for running a small three phase load on single phase input. You just need to get a drive about 40% larger than your load. They also make speed changes easy with a rheostat or touch pad.

Sorry haven't seen that one before but in the West we don't get a big selection anyway. Grizzly have on line manuals for their machines and you could try there. Link is below.

Don't get too excited as I had a look through their list and couldn't see your machine but I might have missed it because there are quite a few.
Looking through the specs of your machine there is plenty of travel, a dovetail column and lots of features so you would have to be happy with your purchase. Go and make lots of chips.Cheers,
Rod

G'day Craig, Sorry it took a while to reply, I've been interstate.
To answer your question...
It's not a bad tool but it is typically Chinese The engineering and finish leave a lot of room for improvement but it was built to a price and considering that it cost about $1500 I can't complain too much! At some stage down the line when I have a bit of cash free I think I'll look for a used good quality universal mill like a Bridgeport. Although my mill is a V column I don't think You can get as good a result out of a mill/drill as a well engineered purpose built machine and I would like the option of being able to mill horizontally. I guess it all ultimately depends what you want out of the tool. As a heavier duty hobby machine it's as good as anything else in the under $3000 price range but my preference is still for a more solid pupose built unit
Cheers, Steve.

G'day Steve,
Hope your ebay purchase works out. When you are ready to upgrade, check out the FEIN Magnetic Drills. Depending on your needs, there's the KBM 32Q, KBM 52U and KBM 65Q. Beautiful piece of machinery. And made in Germany. It's got the dual dovetail, plus infinitely variable stroke range. You can do your horizontal or vertical or upsidedown milling too. Prices are pretty reasonable too. They start at around $2000 for the 32Q.
Anyway, good luck.
