Milling, Laser Cutting or Waterjet a large object
Hi All,
I have essentially a box made of plate aluminium (dimensions are 380mm width, 362mm depth and 90mm height with it constructed of 6mm plate aluminium) and after getting it made (TIG welded together), totally forgot about the slot that I need cut into the front (a 130mm long by 6mm high slot). The problem is the slot is at the front which means to use something like a laser or water jet cutter, the box needs to be stood on end which means it will by 362mm high.
So my question is, how can I go about getting a straight slot cut into the aluminum?
Thanks.
PS, I'm in Brisbane BTW, so if anyone knows a company that could do this for me, that would be great.

Hi Mangrovejack.
There are plenty of ways to get that slot depending on what you want to spend and whether or not you want to do it your self. If it were me and I wanted to farm the job out, a machine shop or buddy with a vertical mill could machine that slot no problem, the common mill drill would probably not have enough room but a larger mill would work. If you want to do it yourself and have some carpentry tools you could easily cut it with a plunge router and a straight edge or with a router table use wd40 or whatever the local version is as a lubricant and take light passes with a carbide bit. You could also drill either end and use a jigsaw with the right blade and clean up with a well chalked file, I think the mill would be the best bet though. Best of luck.

What's wrong with a router? I find my variable speed router great in aluminium and cast iron!
