Hi Bob, I have no experience with buying 5C collets but I do have a 5C to ER32 adapter.. You can buy it locally now for $63.50 from http://www.ausee.com.au/shop/category.aspx?catid=5096

One thing to watch is you are putting a collet in a collet and in more cases you will stack errors rather then cancel them out... The 5C collet will have run out and the ER32 collet will have run out as well, the law that if something can go wrong then it will means the maximum combine runout will always happen..

    Hi Richard,
Thanks for the link, I just ordered the adapter. The prices seem quite reasonable, good to see as our dollar has gone so far down.I understand that double stacking will increase the errors, I only want to use this unit for machining square and hexagon bolt heads etc. Anything that requires a higher degree of accuracy I will use the dividing head on, thanks for the head up. Great work on your part to be the major saver of that great old machine you are getting quite a collection. Better build an even bigger shed if you intend to keep this up.
    Regards Bob

    Nice work Peter .

Thanks for the photos of the stop's innards. The incorporation of the spring is neat , I imagine it's soft enough to take the jar out of the impact against the fixed stop and stiff enough to creep up to the same stop without fear of going too far.

    Hi mate,

That stop with the incorporated spring is a neat sweet job. I must ask, when you made the threaded part with the knurled knob, is that all one part or did you press fit the knob onto some all thread?

    Cheers,

    Simon

Well nothing technical about this job. I promised my mate a new gear knob for his Patrol. Its SS and I ended up polishing it for fun. The end and grooves were done with my ball turner.

Everyones a comedian! Actually I have never polished a METAL part before. I was happy with the finish straight from the lathe but then got a little carried away, It's fun polishing on the lathe! I dare say it's only for the initial presentation as it will last all of 5 minutes once it's put to use. Also, now that it's finished I'm thinking it's pretty heavy for a gear knob. I think I'm going to bore it out leaving a 5mm wall thickness and then insert an aluminium sleeve. Rightly or wrongly I choose to avoid a solid aluminium knob as I thought stainless might "resist" gouges and scratches longer than ali but who knows. Simon
