The shiney bits and today's Waldown progress....

Should finish the drilling table tonight. Maybe another coat tomorrow, that should be it.... Assembly next week.

Ray: Sorry, I'm on a roll - so I got some 2K paint in a can from a paint chart which closely matches the belt guard of my NH Waldown and a couple of reasonable paint spots left on this one... The photos show it too blue.
    Cheers,
    Joe

Sometimes you just can't help yourself! I never can.......
Do you have a paint name/code for the colour? Could be useful for anyone else looking for a match.

    Hi Joe,

The spray painting party can be resurrected another day, looks like you have it pretty well sussed anyway.. With the 2 pack 2K acrylic, I found that it really takes a week or so to harden fully. After that it's as tough as old boots. Not sure it would take hammer blows, but tough enough and a little bit of flex so as to not crack or chip with the odd bump.

The vise color looks about right, the earlier pictures look a bit too "smurf like".

Here is another one of the vice showing the repairs to the 'Swiss cheese' effect.
Ray, the colour is even more turquoise than the photos show... it is called C/MAP Turquoise 461 in a Blue G2 base L2k ... whatever any of that means.
Next time I go there, I'll ask what system the swatches refer to and what standard it represents.... I know it wasn't RAL

I took a break from the telescope stand today and finally put my gantry arm up. I have had 2 lengths of 150x75 C section for a long time now it has been earmarked for a post for the gantry and the rest for a new hydraulic press. The old press went to a mates places for pressing plate armor parts and never came back. It was pretty flimsy any way....

So i welded the pivot on to the post then put it up. At the very end of the arm i hung a 110KG weight i happened to have handy (myself) and there were no ominous noises from the shed or arm. Since it is really only for lifting things on and off the machines and surface plate it should be fine. Just need a winch now, thinking about one of these- NEW Dynamic Power 1020W 250 500kg 12M Rope Electric Winch Hoist Lift Tool | eBay

The press will just be the standard type, i have a 20t air/hydraulic jack i will use. I set up this arvo and started to drill the 25mm holes in the sides for the support pins. Its nice having a big mill, mind you i only have about 13mm of Z to spare.....

I have that exact winch. It is mounted on a slightly modified (shimmed) girder trolley to the IBeam in my garage. I would however like to have the rotating arm that you constructed. It never quite seems to be in the right position. Not over the milling table but close, and not into my cabinets holding vices/rt's etc. I might have to borrow a few ideas on that swinging arm..

    Hi Ewan,

Looks great! I've had one of them on the list for a fair while now. I was planning on using pipe for the post, but I could be talked around. Can you get about 270 degrees of rotation? Of course I dont have a convenient rafter so will need to make up some sort of frame for the top. Can I have some more pictures of the pivots please.

Those winches are alright for lifting stuff on and off the mill(you use the Z for the first and last couple of inches) but they sure start and stop with a bang, which wouldnt be so good for the lathe or if you're game surface plate. I've made a varible speed hoist but havent done a lot of testing on it(well I dont have the gantry do I!). I've seen air hoists. I wonder how slow they go? never used one and they go for to much money for me to play with.

    Hi Stuart,
I remeber a discussion RC and Phil F (and probably others) had about winches for lifting things on and of the surface plate. My plan was to get a handle type winch as well, and use it for initial lifting and setting down, then the electric one for the body of the work. I just hope i don't run out of "Z".
    Variant,
The arm came from the tip shop some months ago, i will post some more details for you and Stu when i am at home.

That is how I handled my 10EE headstock Ueee.....

One of those cheap power winches above with one of those little 250kg tool box buddies below it.... Use the electric winch to raise and lower onto the wooden scraping table...

Use the 250kg come-a-long to lower the headstock onto the bed for marking it up... I must have done it a hundred times....
