It might just be that the Starrett last word can get a little sidetracked at times if its moved to full scale. I've good a picture on there somewhere I'll try and dig it up.

If you remove the screw cap from the end(not the side) you might see something like this. The lever(red arrow) should be in the slot(green arrow).
This of course assumes that your lastword has the same insides as my lastword and that this is the problem.

Try Qualos
Hi Garry,
I have sent a Mitutoyo to Qualos in Melbourne for repair. It was an easy fix for them and the price was pretty good. Note they don't calibrate after repair.
You should be able to get a recommendation from whoever imports Starrett.
Cheers

There is always Long Island Indicator Service in USA.
http://longislandindicator.com/index.html
Don't know if the shipping will be too expensive.
There is a lot of information buried in there.

Findlay.

Dial Indicator
Gentlemen many thanks for all the advice, I have cleaned the contact point pivot end and a drop of Singer sewing machine oil and all is good.
It appears through lack of use the movement became sluggish and gummed up.
