Router motor for tapping?

First off......I'd like to thank everybody for the help and conversations here.
You have been very helpful.
I want to mount a motor on the cross slide and fit a tapping device like Abratools https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/he...-stops-157551/
It'll be a 5mm tap into aluminium to a depth of about 12mm.
This picture gives a bit of idea of what I'm talking about.

At the moment I'm thinking of mounting a CNC router motor with speed control onto the slide. Obviously the motor has to be able to produce good torque at a slow speed.
This is entirely new territory for me so any ideas as to what motor and how to fit a chuck and collet to the shaft will be great.

too fast I would think. I wouldn't think you would be able to run it slow enough.

Would there be any stepper motors strong enough?

GSRocket you might be able to do it with something like this 8mm Diameter Output Shaft 24V 1.5A DC Gear Motor 45RPM | eBay

Naturally you will have to work out what voltage, torque and and what RPM you require , do a search on ebay for gear motor.

M5 in Al - you could probably do that with a battery drill. Get an old 12 V one or something and convert that.

Do you plan on this motor/spindle being reversable?
Is this motor/spindle going to slide on its own rails?
Are you using this motor/spindle for drilling the tapping holes?
Have you got a positive lock worked out for the indexing of the lathe spindle?
Have you looked at using a motor off a spit for tapping,this maybe a bit slow for drilling.

maybe it would have 2 speed g/box and you would have speed control as well

The lathe will have indexing.
Reversing will be wanted. I looked at self reversing tapping heads but they're rather bulky for my use. Abratools device looked so neat and compact so I will want reversing.
I have thought of a cordless drill and I'm sure the good ones would have the power to tap. Something like this shouldn't be to hard to fit to the slide by where its handle slides on. Just looking at all and any sort of option.

What do you think would be an appropriate RPM for tapping?

I tap at the slowest available speed on my Waldown drill press: 150 rpm. That seems plenty fast enough.
