Setting up lathe
Hi folks,
Well on to the next adventure. I have bought and set up a metal lathe - a 12"x36inch Chinese one. Why Chinese? Well I looked at Brand names and most of them were either clapped out expensive second hand or rebadged Chinese ones if new. No-one in this country makes lathes any more.
Well I got it all wired up - it came without a lead - and push the button and away it went - almost. ALMOST! It only works when I hold the start button in. I am wondering if it is a faulty switch, or if I have done something majorly wrong! I am too scared to admit to the supplier that I might have stuffed up the connection, and if it is a switch they are easily available. I thought you had to press the button once to start it and press the same button to stop it. maybe not? Does anyone know?
Regards
Neville

Here's a possibility for you, the button your pushing, sure sounds like an inching button which you find on some lathes, it's there so you can just turn the chuck a tad whilst setting up the job.
Have you had a good read of the instruction book, lots of info in there ?
Any chance of some pics, so that it can be seen what lathe it is, even a description of the numbers on the lathe might help ?

There is a lever on the carriage that if you pull it side ways and lift it up it goes forward and pull side ways and pushing it down is reverse.Radish is right you do need to read the manual. If yours is unreadable (bad translation)you can download one from Grizzly in the US they have all there lathe manuals online and are pretty good to understand just pick one that looks like yours. There is a group on the internet called 12x36importlathes you can join,it has heaps of info on this size lathe. Here is the link http://groups.yahoo.com/group/12x36importlathes/?yguid=346828215

Hi there,
The instruction book sucks and is restricted to basic diagrams and tables for screw cutting etc. The switch I thought was the "start" switch is designated "Jog Switch" so you may be right, which brings me to the obvious question "how the Hell do I switch it on for continuous running? The Model desigation is C06230A
Thanks

Might be a silly question, but have asked the dealer you bought it from?

I do hope this question is a serious one and your not taking the .
So if it is genuine, try this lot.
If you can push the jog button and the chuck turns, then look down to your right and there should be a lever with a red knob on it. Grab that lever and push it down, you might get a surprise.
