Simple Lathe Tool Centre Height Gauge
I had been making a mounting stud for my tool grinder when something happened and the piece I was working on was relegated to the scrap box. A common occurrence.
It was only a piece of 1214 but I thought about it and decided to turn it into a gauge based loosely on one Hardinge make for their lathes. The mounting stud was just a cylinder with a wider flat base and that flat base would make for a stable gauge.
To adjust and then lock the gauge at the required height the grub screw in the base is loosened, the upper section screwed in or out as required then the grub screw is tightened. I recessed the inner base to facilitate lapping should the base get nicked.
The offset top allows also for the setting of rear mounted cut off blades.
Flame and sump oil coloured.

Here's a link to the site and the tool that provided the inspiration for my gauge. It may be of interest.

Thanks for the kind words Pete.
You can be sure Hardinge would have made their gauge out of something a bit better than the 1214 I used. You've only got to look at the stuff and it rusts. It's only saving grace is it's ease to machine.
