The telescopic support stays in the back of the catalogue could be a good option for some applications. They are simple mechanical design with a latch, and no gas to leak out.
I had one like that on a VW, holding up the bonnet.

    Default Try this...

I came across this file a year or two ago when I was looking for something related (gas springs for Landcruiser boot) and grabbed it in case I needed something to calculate gas spring sizes at a later date. It sounds like this might help you -

    Gas struts ?

They're those things that don't work on the first cold day and the lid comes down and whacks you on the back off the head.

    No hang on that's wrong.

Gas struts are those things that are over pressurised, and throw you out the tractor cab when you open the door with your hand on the grip.

    Yes, I remember gas struts.

A nice big twisty coil spring can do a better job.
