Default Supplier of threaded backplate in Oz

    G'day coves

I've inherited my grandfather's Advance lathe. It's usable but lacks a 3 jaw chuck. Is there a supplier in the wide, brown land that can sell me a 100mm backplate threaded 1in.-10tpi? Web searching shows that there is a Bison one available from a number of suppliers across the pond but with the weight of the mongrel it'd cost as much to post it as buy it given that surface mail has gone the way of flared dacks.

Search for one in the UK as well. With the pound being at an all time low I'm finding it a lot cheaper to import stuff direct from the UK rather than Aust suppliers.

FWIW 1"x10 is 1" BSF. This is still a fairly common wood lathe spindle nose thread, so it is possible that some of the woodworking machinery suppliers might be able to supply something suitable, either a back plate or small face plate which could be modified. Some of the American Atlas lathes had 1" x 10 spindle noses. These would have been 60 degree thread angle, rather than the 55 degree BSF thread which would almost certainly have been used on the Advance, so would not be a correct fit on the Advance spindle, should one of these turn up.

I have found delivery costs from the UK are usually far in excess of those from the US.

Little Machine Shop has a 1"x10tpi backplate in 4" (in fact I have the same backplate in M39x4).

This plate should fit (size wise) in the small Flat Rate Box/Envelope, but not sure whether it weighs more than the 4lb that is allowed in there. If it fits within the size/weight parameters it would cost around $US14 to ship, plus $US18 for the backplate. If not it would cost $US40, but you can then add other bits and pieces up to 20lbs.

Edit: Just looked at their site, it weighs 2.30 lbs, so would be worth an email to them.

    Big Shed,

The Little Machine Shop backplates are probably 60 degree thread angle and unified thread form as used on Atlas and some other light lathes. The Advance spindle is almost certainly 55 degree BSF, which has the Whitworth thread form with rounded crests and valleys, so the L M S backplate is unlikely to be a very good fit on the Advance spindle, though it will probably screw on OK. It would, if possible, be better to find or make a properly fitting 1" BSF backplate.

LMS also sell the same back plate unthreaded so it can be threaded to any type of thread.

Could be the way to go then if nothing is available locally in 1" BSF.

I dunno if it helps, but i recall a few 2nd hand face plates and backing plates of 1" inch thread at Mick Moyles (engineers supplies, Summer Hill, Sydney). However i can't remember the pitch! There were a few labelled for Qualos lathe.
    hope this may help,
    Andrew.

I made my own backplate. Get a 1" bsf nut, weld it to a suitable piece of steel then face it on your lathe to suit the chuck that you are going to use.

    A link for the OP.

    Advance Metalworking Lathe

I have the tapered bearing headstock with 1 1/4 10TPI spindle nose and yet to come across another one. I'll finish the rebuild one day.

Default Looks like I've nailed one

One of our subscribers has a backplate in the post for me. It will be interesting to see what the thread form is. Price is decent, much better than other leads I followed. Posting steel in from OS is a very expensive undertaking.

Many thanks to all for taking the trouble to reply to my plea for help.

    Cheers

    Ah good for you!
I but wistfully dream of ready made backplates/ faceplates for my Premo lathe. It is a rather rare 1 3/4" x 7 tpi, haven't even come across nuts that size in my usual scrounging places hint hint hint
