I was just using a small HSS gouge on an improvised tool rest on the cross slide of my little 7x10.
I actually found it faster than using a toolpost cutter. I can't see making a habit of doing the tool steel except for putting a little bead or something to dress up a bit but the AL and brass for turning knobs and such, I can't see messing with building a ball turning fixture.
