Aussie Acacia Carneii (Australian Purple Heart)
Just love this dense hard wood grown in the Kimberlies rare as 2nd most dense timber in the World. Beaut colour that does not alter, making it quite unique.
Regards Peter.

Beautiful timber & pen
Please someone correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding is:
Acacia carnei is now called Acacia carneorum, which I call Pink Gidgee, as it is the one with the pink ring between the dark heartwood and light sapwood. It is true however that the wood colour does not change, and what your pen is made from.
I know Purple Gidgee as Acacia crombiei, as it is the Gidgee that has the true purple center, but no ring. It also is a greeny brown colour when freshly cut, turns purple in time/sunlight, but then stays that way.
Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.) is brown when freshly cut, turns purple in daylight, but eventually turns back to brown in time.

Peter, the way you obtained heart wood either side of the main wood gives a beautiful contrast, also looks like you turned itas a cross cut blank. Amos

Another wonderful pen you have made there. I love the contrast in the colours. Absolutely specular.
I am always pleasantly surprised how you come across all these wonderful Australian timbers.
You should be Australia's ambassador on all the different types of Aussie hardwood's that can be turned into pens.
Thanks for sharing.

Very nice pens Peter. I too love the contrast between the sapwood and heartwood. Those hardwoods do turn and finish beautifully.

Hi Fellas
Two things I will never tire of one is Aussie Timber the other Slimlines, then I am not biased but have a passion for respecting the grain and colour.
Neil old buddy this Pen is Acacia Carneii straight from the horses mouth the grower in far off. A member of our Wood Guild has also been to the horses mouth and verifies what I have said he too is an authority in timber names. My small piece came from a larger piece my mate ended up with given me some time ago by a friend who spent half a day in Sth Australia with a determination to have some of it to bring home to Canberra. He is more pedantic with names than I am. When I was born I was given a name, a pedigree name ie family name and even though fashions in names change from state to state district to district with regard to tree names like persons names I am never one to dispute those who define names initially.I know Gondwana became Australia.
I enjoy your dissertations on names, your learned approach to timbers. Are not all the Aussie timbers beautiful and I do not seek to correct you only agree to disagree my
privilige and yours. Sounds a bit like on a crusade for Aussie lamb.
Kind regards Peter.Last edited by Penpal; 29th January 2011 at 07:06 PM. Reason: word
