Birds Eye Huon - Traditional FP
This was a blank that I was saving because it was 6 inches long. I was going to make a closed end pen with it. This traditional FP needed a 6 inch blank.
This blank is probably the best Birds eye Huon I have ever seen. It reminds me of my university days where I did a subject called "Introduction to Astronomy". The pictures that we use to stare at of astronomical formations of of stars and gases, the wonderful swirls of contrasting colors.
This will be a treasured pen that will be a keeper in my collections.
Very happy with this one.
PS I posted both types of background. Which of the backgrounds do you think is the best?
Thanks for looking and thanks for your comments in advance.

Great looking pen David and that blank is to die for.
I like both backgrounds, but for different reasons.
The black background looks more dramatic and eye catching. It does however loose some detail in the pen (particularly edge detail), so to show the detail the white (I assume it is white?) background is better. It shows much more detail in the pen and your exposure is better in those shots. But either your original white balance is off or, more likely, you are getting the different colurs in post processing.
Don't know what aperture you are using, but you are struggling for depth of field on most of the shots. Not being critical but trying to give some constructive comment. Overall the photos are very good indeed.
Are you selling any of these birdseye Huon blanks?

Wow, that is literally, a pen and a half...!
So 6" long, huh? in what 3/4" or 1"?
My preference goes always to fountain pens, I just like to write with them...!
With this one, you either have to have a "big" hand or should I call it the "two handed pen!"
The timber, well what can I say...! oh I know...., I wish that I had some...!
Cheers

Nice pen BIG but nice
As for your photos I think it depends were/how you use them, from a distance or small photos the black stands out. But up close and personal the white give that extra detail that we look for. I hope you know what I mean.Cheers Rum Pig

Great looking blank turned into a great FP. Excellent photography as well the black seem to loose some of the definition but the white is great, not sure what the black material is but try a piece of black mirrored perspex.
What diameter are these pens finished?

Hi All
Thanks for the kind comments.
HazzaB - finish was my usual of 20 thin coats of CA.
Big Shed - There is birds eye Huon, and there is birds eye Huon. I would classify this blank as the best your going to get. I have another 2 left from the same piece. PM me you details and I will send you one. Only problem is that it might not be 5 inches long.
RBTCO - The pen is not big, its just long. Craft supplies sell a different version of this pen where the back end of the pen has a gold postable bit about an inch long. This means that you only need a 5 inch blank rather than a 6.
Sam - The brass tubes require a 10mm drill bit, but the finished barrell is 11.5mm which is much thinner than the large size pens.
Photographs - Yes the black looks stunning, but I think I will stick to using the white background. Now that I have time to compare the two and with the feedback from you guys, white is the background of choice.
Thanks again for all you comments.
Regards

Mick
There is a matching roller ball as well they are RL 101 and RL 102, Carb-a-tec, Carrolls and I think GPW have them, there is also a snap cap version of them. I prefer the longer style and they are easy to convert to a closed end pen if you want one a bit cheaper in the range of closed end style of pen.

Hi Mick
The maker of the pen kit - Dayacom, call it the Traditional Rollerball / Gountain Pen without long end cap
http://www.dayacom.com.tw/product_02...lass_item_id=2
Craftsupplies in the US call the postable version "Artisan Pen Kit"
http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/st...tisan_pen?Args=
Hope it helps.
