    Default Cigar

Here's another cigar that is a piece of Curly Maple that is treated with Chromium Dioxide to give it the brown tones.

    Interesting looking pen.

Only use I know of for Chromium Dioxide was on magnetic tapes and cassettes, never heard of its' use in timber finish/treatment.

    Tell us more please.

    Thanks John,

Chromium Trioxide is a product black powder shooters here use to get the stripes in their Maple gun stocks to 'pop'.

I notice I misspelled Trioxide and put a "D" in there by mistake. You get a very small jar (2oz?) and it is crystals. You add water and rubber gloves are a must.

First, raise the grain on the timber, by wetting the wood surface with water, and force it dry with heat. (I use a heat gun)

Use 0000 fine steel wool to remove "whiskers" from the wood surface. Repeat once or twice. If you do not raise the grain, compressed wood fibers will eventually raise under your finish, causing a textured surface.

I then take a cotton swab and apply it to the wood. I let it sit for about 30 minutes and it turns almost black.

If you let it sit for less time the wood will have a yellowish/orange look to it.

Wash it off with a mixture of 50% water and 50% vinegar until the desired color is achieved.

Mark, my spell checker let me down ... it's supposed to be Trioxide.

Love the pen, this Chromium Trioxide sounds interesting. Any chance of seeing a piece of the original wood to compare?

It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

    Nope,

    Condy's Crystals

    Chromium Trioxide

Funnily enough Wikipedia doesnt mention any application on gun stocks for Chromium Trioxide, learn something every day.

Did another Google search for Chromium Trioxide and staining of gun stocks, maple in particular.

Quite a few references, this is one, but all make mention of how toxic it is, so before you use it please read the MSDS.

That's where I get it from ... I have another one to try (Aquafortis Reagent) that turns the wood a rich yellow gold browns appearance

Some maple may display attractive reddish brown undertones.
