    Default Colored stainless steel blanks

I remember seeing here someone doing a braided stainless steel cast pen in various colors but I can not remember who and would like to try this. I am pretty sure it was either Neil or John. If you could post the photo again and also tell me about the color addative used so I can give this a try. Also any helpful tips to getting the color right without being too dark. Thanks.

There you go JT LINK I used a very small amount of transparent dye I got from the PR supplier Neil showed me his method of getting the color to what you want (always a bit of a guess) using his clear paddle pop mixing stick ,by holding the stick up and letting the excess run off you can estimate the depth of color through the mix remaining on the stick ,fortunately in this case (cigar kits) there is a reasonable coverage of acrylic when finished so the color stayed pretty much as wanted . Hope that helps you in your project Cheers ~ John

    Thanks John

I knew I seen someone doing these. I hope to get a true color as his. It will be on a straight tube so the color should be consistant. Just another idea running around in my head right now. Did you have any problem with the resin setting up??? Did you have to compensate for this???

No problems at all with these as I recall ,just the same as standard clear casting

As John says, just need to be careful on the tapered or variable thickness when turned shapes to avoid variations in colour consistency. Some of mine are here and here.

Make sure you mix the dyes thoroughly to ensure consistency of colour before adding the catalyst.

    Cheers
    Neil

    Thanks Neil

I thought I remembered one of you talking about the color intensity with the more material you turn away. The project I have in mind, I am not sure if I will try powdercoating a different color or adding color to the resin. But at least I have an idea on both ways. Thanks again and nice pens. Good to see them again.

Neil Can you provide a link for your colorants.???? The one in that thread does not work any more. Thanks. Did you ever do the glow in the dark colors???

One other question Neil, how are you trimming the stainless steel blank these days??? Has it been a good system for you??? Any photos???

I get my Pearlex currently from coastalscents, pigments and dyes from amcsupplies but the other has closed, dalchem is another I was going to try, heat/sunlight affected from solarcolordust

Did you ever do the glow in the dark colors??? You mean like these? I used powder from glowinc

    Cheers
