    Default And A Couple More

Managed to get some more shed time last night to get stocks back up after the weeks out

    1. Aust Elegant Beauty - Rose Myrle Burl
    2. Baron Rollerball - Myrtle Burl
    3. Baron Rollerball - Spalted Crab Apple
    4. Baron Rollerball - Crosscut Spalted Hackberry

The finish is BLO/CA on all, this finish is coming up fantastic with a really glass like shine

the hackberry was very soft and great care was needed to avoid blow ups, but the end result was very good

i have taken to using the roughing gouge and all of the pens were turned completely with this tool, i have discovered that it can be used as a skew type chisel with the same smooth finish, only 1 tool to keep sharp - works for me.

    thanks for looking

Excellent work MIK, I also like your presentation. My favorite is the cc hackberry. If you soak it in WOP a few times before you start turning you will find it will harden up. I have been doing this with the softer timber to stabilize them.

    Hey Mik,

Very Nice Pens, I like them all, I have up until last week only been using a Bowl gouge for all my pens, I have had a bit of time to do some reading lately and read a book about turning and the Author Who's name I can't remember had a chapter on the Skew Chisel, I have always been scared of them cause they 'dig in and stuff up good bits of timber' but I have learned a bit and have done a couple of pens this week and thay Worked , I will post some pics as soon as my Complicator is back from Expensive Care.
    Sorry about the Ramble,

    thanks for the replies guys

Sam i just got hold of a vacuum pump, which i believe will help to stabilize by sucking the laquer into the wood, just need to work out how to hook it all together, but thanks for the tip on WOP

HazzaB - mate ramble all you like, i always bump my gums like there is no tomorrow, i have been using a skew pretty much all the time, but on trying the roughing gouge with 2 straight sharp edges, i am a convert, very happy with the results

    thanks again
