As usual, beautiful work Sam. How do you drill a blank that long? Tricky I would imagine.
Reality is no background music.

Beautiful!
I always seem to have trouble pairing up timbers to the gold kits, this one pulls it off with style.

Nice pen Sam.
Is the Americana the same as the Retro and Rizhengs - Secret top pen?
Timberbits.

Thanks for the kind words, the blackwood is really great to work with alas it is difficult to find especially curly.
David
The difference is the retro is a two piece barrel although you can modify it to a one piece. I have not seen the Rizheng top secret pen so can't comment. This kit came form Jim. In some places it is also called an Executive.
John
No , more difficult than the shorter barrels to drill just sometimes you have to adjust the blank for the length unless you have long series drills.
Todd
The darker timbers seem to favor the gold or better still the rhodium kits, this blank was just the right length for the American just to face off the ends, I try not too waste good timber.

Sam,
Do you drill on a drill press, or use your lathe?
I round over my blanks, then chuck them up in the three jaw on my lathe, and use the tail stock as the drill...this automaticly centers the blanks, and lets me reverse them and drill from both ends.

Nice work, Sam! That's a remarkable piece of timber. I betting that it was highly chatoyant just from the photos. Your drill press must have quite a throw on it for you to drill that blank!
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Sam, brilliant piece of blackwood and equally brilliant finishing in your pen crafting. Just another fine example of what you are creating.

Sam, very nicely done as usual!
Really great looking timber with good choice of kit plating.

Lovely result Sam.
Blackwood is a great wood and offers
so much character to the finished product.
