Unfortunately, if you look close at a cd, near the center hole, on one or both sides, it is raised. If you tried to glue them up like that, they would have small gaps between each cd. I am going to give my scrollsaw a workout. Even that is hard because if you are not careful, the cd will crack. I will probably use a jewelers blade to cut them.

hey everyone,
i think the cd idea might just work. but i would make sure that you roughing chisel is nice and sharp and wear a face shield for fear of flying shards of plastic. i want to see it when it's done.

i've thought of the cd thing many times...i have never tried it though because i honestly thought it would be to unsafe.
would glue stick to it.?
would heat cause it to crack?
is having little bits of plastic flying at you safe?
i asked myself those 3 questions and decided not to try...untill i see someone else do it...also i've yet to turn alot of things that i've got to do ( a certain pen collection needs finishing lol. )

yeah but they're not sharp and dont have the potential to get lodged into your skin
if your glue up broke, and a disc escaped and flew at you at over 1000 rpm i'd imagine the sharp edge would find your arm or something...and i know this could happen with wood to but i'd think it wood be more probable with cds...

True. I'll be wearing a face mask for at least the first attempt.

Aww... shucks.
Seriously though, although I was having a bit of fun with Stirlo, he had a valid point and I wouldn't want anyone to be hurt 'cos I've made light of a situation.
A 52x cd-rom spins at up to 27500rpmand should be able to handle lathe speeds alright... but it's not being whacked with a big stick at the same time.
Worse, not all CD's are rated at 52x... 1x's only spin up to 500rpm, so there's always a chance that any randomly selected CD/DVD from my "dead pile" will shatter at lathe speeds.
And the edges are sharp... I've shattered 'em before, although not in a lathe. Full sleeves and a face mask are definitely appropriate wear for this attempt.

Should be interesting Skew but be careful I remember them doing this on Mythbusters and it got a bit dangerous but they had it going at the high speeds way over 2000 to see it it would shatter, I have found the link to the show
Just watch the first 30 sec ya will see what happened to the DUMMY.
From Mytbusters Site: It was proven that a high rotation (in excess of 8,000 RPMs) could shatter the CDs, but the MythBusters could not achieve this using an average CD-ROM drive. Possible physical damage to the CD made shattering more likely.
Sorry Skew my thought is please don't do it.
But good Idea.I like to move it move it, I like to move it.

Faint heart never won fair maiden. I say, "Go for it!" Heavy jacket, gloves, and face shield should do it.
Very pretty pen, Laurie. Love the wood grain. When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Laurie,
Great pen you have created, the angles are what I call a perfect angle, not too shallow or too steep. The Ebony bands are not over-stated and are in proportion of the overall design and the soda can shims highlight the credit card veneers and a nice Maple Burl as well. A pen to be proud of.
Skew,
Don't use super glueIt disolves the dye on the disc and does fly apart. I would say an epoxy would be the only way to go. I did rough the sides up before gluing, oh, the face shield idea, that's a good one. I didn't wear one, wish I did
Didn't get hit luckily but scared the **** out of me. To get rid of the hub I used a forsner bit in the drill press and drilled them out. Good Luck Skew

Yup, I didn't want to use any glue with a solvent. so used epoxy after lightly roughing the surfaces with 240grit.
I've only glued 6 disks together so far, tomorrow I'll check the glue strength and cut the laminates in half, to double over and make a full thickness blank.
To get rid of the hub I used a forsner bit in the drill press and drilled them out.
Then it's just as well my lathe won't go over 5200 or so, isn't it?
From memory, the Mythbusters spun 'em up in a modified angle-grinder to totally ridiculous speeds.... up in the 20-30,000 range, not a simple 2,000rpm. A simple lathe should be safe enough, but I'm still not going to take any risks.

The sunlight did it's trick today (not that there was much of it) - I messed up the centre join a bit - the lower one received one over zealous sanding too many and is just shy of in line. Better luck next time. Thanks Laurie for sharing - it was fun AND met approval of HWMBO!

Brittle some are some are not . As for turning give it a go carn't heart much just wear protective gear incase murphy sticks his nose in .I turned some perspex the other day for a 50mm,2inch picture frame back that jess made for her grandfather the other day. Just dont do it cold about 24degr celcius then it will be a bbit more flexible .and less likely to shatter.Hay Skew dont for get to play ac/dc 's thunder so no one can hear you scream .lol
