I'd finish the pen - is probably a winner, people like things that are different

I mean using a live centre like this.
Just remove the centre-tip so you can poke the threaded end of the mandrel right through, and turning a wooden bush to stop the mandrel from flapping around in the hole like a freshly caught fish. (A bit of copper, etc. tube would be better if you could find one of the right size.)
This quick sketch might explain it better?

could be something that is tried in me shed at some time in the future

Thanks Skewregards

Yup.
But once you start having problems with ovalled pens and begin looking at alternative methods, then things like these live-centres start becoming good value... 'cos they can be used for far more than just pens.
