    Default Spider for Wendy

Here’s 2 spider pens I knocked out over the weekend so Wendy could pick one for her HWMBO. The darker one is Tibouchina Noeleen, the lighter one Bonewood with Ebony inlays. The inlays were half butteflies, but I stuffed up and ended up turning them out when I tapered the tip – should have put them as the top half. The Tibouchina also had a crack/feature come out as I turned. This type of feature is normally what I want, but its unfortunate location was right next to the spider – good news was the resin also went into the crack while filling the leg.

    Cheers
    Neil

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... well, I'm going to try my hand at one o' them one day, once I manage to work out how to get the web pens looking right.

Maybe 10 years from now, at my current rate of progress. [sigh]
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

I liked the look of your web and seriously thought about a spider in a web, but it sounded like too much work - maybe one day

Not sure what you mean Stirlo. You mean a blank with the spider cut in and cast? Or a blank with the laminates cast in?

They can go horibly wrong. The legs can join on the spiders, bits fly off, and the red dots often come out - I often do a lot of repair whilst turning.

Nothing wrong with that . You would be surprise at how many people use this stuff.

What do you add to the resin to make it black?
    Cheers

I use pigment for black. Dyes or pigments for other colours depending on whether I want a translucent effect (dyes), or just solid colour (pigments). I get mine from here or here

    Stunning Neil!! Absolutely Stunning!!!

I think the Tibouchina Noeleen one will be the winner.

Wow - Yep, HWMBO is lucky, hmm wonder if he'll notice me using it before xmas

Thanks Neil!!! Looking forward to seeing them in a week's time.

    cheers

    Neil,
I think they are great pieces of work. I can also see you really helping Wendy get more shed time and shed space, when she says to HWMO that given the right time and opportunities, she might be able to do more similar instances of fine woodworking.
Most people, given such a lovely choice of present, would be keeping it for themselves, even after the pre-Christmas testing. Ruffly might be making her lifee more difficult if she starts to use the pen and enjoys it too much!

In fact, I am so impressed by that logic, I can see many members of this Forum wanting to apply it to their partner/spouses. I am one. Are you taking orders for purchases? I will try most things, once, so I hope you understand the spirit of the compliment I am offering.

Generally I turn for relaxation, not for sale, but I do sell my excess. Every now and then though I get a specific PM request like Wendy's , and usually work out a deal . I do however do an extra lot just before Xmas to sell because so many people from my work ask for them
