Gee Skew, you do think outside the box.

Another way for a spiral snake would be, rather than usuing the scroll saw, to use a dremmel with a small router bit following a pencil line for the body. Casting the resin would be a pain with multiple pours. Alternatively you could place a small length of PVC tube over the blank in the area you wanted, sealed with blue-tac, then just filled it up - probably uses just as much resin and only takes one pour.

I did make one snake before, but stuffed up the colours and no-body liked it anyway, so haven't tried any others. The spiral idea has merit and perhaps worth a try.

If I can make something unnecessarily complicated, that's the first way I'll try it.

I like the dremel idea, but most of the casting I've done that way has eventually had problems with chunks coming adrift, even when I've "undercut" the edge a bit to lock the resin in. I'm obviously no expert. Having a nice, deep cut (like, to the tube) gives it so much more surface area to key to, safer for dolts like me.

Do you reckon it'd be practical to wrap one end in tape, fill to near the top of the tape (with the blank stood on one end) wrap a bit more in tape, and repeat until the whole blank is done? I think it'd be messy, but would use a minimum of resin. I can just see myself trying it now; a whole heap of taped blanks standing on end on top of the washing machine in spin mode, to vibrate out the air bubbles... She in charge of cleanliness would never forgive me!
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

When it comes to my turn to send out the blanks for the monthly pen swap next year, assuming we are still doing them, there may be an extra one it it for you.
