    Default another question

I was talking to a wood turner this morning at the markets and he said I could take the morse taper of the mandrel which I did but the hole in the headstock eas to small. Could I drill the hole out and re-tap it to fit the thread on the end of the mandrel and screw the mandrel into the head stock?
Thanks for all of the help.

That would be the most elegant solution,I doubt the headstock material is too hard to drill and tap .As long as you have a means to drill it central with a drill chuck, and a chuck to hold the tap true when getting started ,as taps that small don't normally have a centre to start it between centres. Most likely its a 1/4 unf thread, especially as most of these things come from the states, its not likely to be metric.good luck with it

Black Ned, to put in a link:

Copy the web address of the thread you want to link to (highlight and Ctrl-C)

In your editor, highlight the text you want to use to point to the link

Click on the globe/paperclip symbol on the editor toolbar

Paste the previously copied web address in the box that pops up (Ctrl-V)

    Save the post

    Easy as that!

You COULD do that, but then you've permanently altered the spindle, and you don't
need to do that. Not all mandrels have to be a morse taper. Some are meant to fit
    over your existing spindle.

Just measure the spindle and the number of teeth and see if you can find the correct mandrel here:

I think this is the right one for the machine http://www.pennstateind.com/store/PKM-AL.html 3/4 by 16 tpi, comes with bushes for 7mm shaft and a 7mm drill as a bonus, a lot cheaper than a new lathe ,and will make pen turning a breeze on that machine ,pity my dynalink was 18mm by 2.5 mm pitch. I had to make my own adaptors for chucks and spindle turning, and my lathe is imperial thread cutting only ,ah well if it was all easy would be no challenge at all hehe, cheers

Paul, looking at the pictures I would guess that the threads are 1 X 8 thread per inch, but you would have to measure using a thread gauge to know for sure. If this is indeed the case you can pick up a mandrel that will screw on at woodturningz.com http://www.woodturningz.com/Woodturn...cessories.aspx . On the downside I do believe you will be limited to the type of pens you can turn since it is a 7mm mandrel. Since I am new to pen turning myself I may be wrong, so any additional advise is welcomed.

The great majority of pen kits are made for a 7 mm mandrel ,it just means you need a set of bushes for each type usually.they will specify the bushes where you get the kit from.

You will also need the spindle adapter to fit that mandral.I've got the same setup.Just make sure you tighten the shaft .My first one came loose and bent. They sent me another one.But it was still a pain in the Well you know what I mean.

Paul, I had the sme problem with an Elu lathe. My solution (which works well) was to buy a MT 2 mandrel and have an engineering firm turn the last half inch of the taper round (removing the taper from that portion). This round end then con be held in the inner circle of the Nova.
    Hope this helps.
