    Question:

Can antler (moose and deer) be used for pen making?

How hard is it to import into Australia?

I thiiiiink you would have issues with Customs if they had a look at the package... You may want to have a look around the Customs website.

well i checked with the AQUIS database and no import permit is necessary

    http://www.aqis.gov.au/icon32/asp/ex...sionID=1792844

and if it is a one off gift type of import then that is ok too with Customs and you can do those once a year.

I have a webfriend in Canada who can obtain deer and moose antler so i thought i might get a bit and see what it is like. Maybe i could send him some banksia pods, i see they are selling for $5.00 a piece. All those little mouths ready to eat you up!

    Thanks Auzzie and Toasty )

You may not need an import permit, but I would expect that Quarantine would be very interested in such materials, since they want to be sure that foot and mouth disease is not imported into Australia. I think you would be wise to ensure the material is properly declared.

There is a deer industry in Victoria, NSW and Qld (that I know of), probably other states and territories as well ... www.diaa.org is the Aust Deer industry website.
They cross breed red deer with elk (? from memory), and there are some breeders with pure bred elk, as well as the red deer and other breeds.

The point? You can source your antler, button and velvet locally.

Totally agree with you Rocker. The point was to see if it was possible to import antler and that it wasn't listed under prohibited imports as well as finding out others experiences obtaining the antler and using it.

All animal and plant materials that are imported need to be actively checked through Quarantine, especially wood which can and does harbour all sorts of beetles, beetle larvae, lichens, moulds, fungii etc.

Trying to escape Customs and Quarantine is a very dangerous thing to do, especially when they do not always know what they are doing - not a joke!

Some years ago a piggery along the West Tamar Highway here had all their pigs slaughtered because of the fear of foot and mouth. What had happened was that the pigs began to show vesicles on their tongues. Quarantine, as it was back then, didn't know and were unable to identify if, in fact, it was foot and mouth disease so they destroyed the herd. Meanwhile, Quarantine had sent off a sample to the infamous Porton Downs Bacteriological Resource Centre in the U.K. who were the only ones holding live virus. The result came back negative, thankfully. Quarantine might not have known, but they reacted swiftly.

    Oops.

Thank you for listening to the precised history lesson.

    Thank you for calling.

Ah, but what about moose? (a moose is NOT a Scottish mouse, it is a rather large beastie that makes the most mournful sounds when it is looking for a mate).

Plus there are deer other than red. Otherwise methinks 'tis a bit like saying use one species of timber and you have used them all, don't you think?

Make note: there is a very long waiting time for prairie dog antlers, according to my webfriend. I understand around the same waiting period as wombat antlers.

have a look around, you'll be suprised whats available locally. However, if you want to have it posted over from O/S, more power to you.

Moose = elk in Europe, wapiti in the US.

Yes you can get into australia but Customs charge you another $50 on top of what you already paid for it so they can radiated it. I know I was involved in a pen blank swap and the guy added a piece of antler and that is what i found any animal product or bark inclusions they won't let it in.

Don't ye go belittling Scottish moosies, laddie, yon be fearsome beasts. Aye, fearsome indeed. Oft a muckle braw cook hae been lost on the moors, lookin' to be fillin' their haggis. Gi'e one tae many a blast on the moosie-call (ye sassenachs... thinkin' thae bagpipes be for torture [shakes head]) and 'tis all over bar the cairn raising.

It also be the real reason nothing be worn under the kilt: ye get one ae those beasties running up ye leg, ye dinnae want 'em tae ruin ye guid silk knickers!

Aye, vicious beasties they be. I thank the Gods they dinnae have antlers as well!
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

That site certainly opens up some unusual possibities. How about Deer Pissel Pens? They would have to be a real seller. And they're even pre-shaped on the end. I bet Toni will be onto them, like a rocket. If you shoot your own deer, you get to make a bullet pen as well.

YEP, I have already shot them an email for the deer horn. To see what they want for one. but if they are too dear I be leaving them where my brother lives they often find deer antlers adn I will bide my time and wait. Plus price of the hide to go with a bullet pen.

But as for the deer pissel pen. I will pass on that thought. I will leave that to you.

Antler is definately an interesting medium to work in. If you can get use to the smell and dust from the antler, if you can't then it is a place you don't want to go. The center core is porous so you can have a hard outer surface and the softer core in the same blank which will needs to be filled with thick CA to finish it properly. Axis antler is the best to turn as there is hardly no inner core.
