First independant pens
Having turned 2 pens with Corbs about 3 months ago, I have finally had a go on my own. Curly jarrah was my first one and while the turning was okay, the glue-up caused issues.
Second was the lace sheoak finished in Danish oil as was the woody pear. I love this timber and will try to get some more soon. Now I have a few spare blanks for practice but I'm quickly running out of inserts and kits. Glad it's fathers day soon.
Cheers
Paul

Looks like you are up and running hehe! Slim kits are easy to come by and not expensive in the grand scheme of things ,but you can make them fairly quickly so need a few in stock , I have some woody pear, but not tried it yet ,looks a nice dark reddish color as a blank . We all start off somewhere in this "addiction" but you do end up with practical and useful items at the end of it all , Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Nice pens there Paul, looks like a nice transition between components and barrels. Just remembered that I have a small bottle of glow that came with a sander pack so have thrown that in the car too. Will get that to you tomorrow along with the blanks
CorbsIt's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

As Santa said oh what fun it is to write sorry ride on that sleigh so it is with pens. The three timbers Woody Pear, Lace Sheoak, and Curly Jarrah are wooley coarse grained, striking rays through, and sometimes cranky grained in that order timbers that you handled quite well. When you make pens so aptly named Slimline you only have a thin layer of wood around the blank, perilously so I feel. I have found over quite a long time now great delight in experimenting with grain and shapes as well as finishes.
Welcome indeed to the time you spent on your own and your acheivements.
Kind regards Peter,

Thanks for all the support everyone and a huge thanks to Corbs. Thanks also for the blanks and GLO, I'll put them to good use. The woody pear actually threw me a curve ball, I was just about finished with it before starting the sanding when I thought a skew would just lightly clean it up a bit more. WRONG. The timber split and peeled off the brass tube. I nearly cried. Nothing a good dose of CA and masking tape couldn't fix. I was lucky as the CA blends in and looks like grain on such a dark wood.
Mental note, stay away from the skew with woody pear.

Oh yeah, I'm hooked.
There are 3 sets of blanks on the desk at home drying after gluing up and I should be able to mill them tonight.
Thanks also to Corbs for the tuition, desperate phone calls over the weekend and his bag of goodies this morning.
