    G'day Darren,
Great to hear that your on the road to recovery. Wouldn't be givin the nurses too much of a hard time, they seem to be able to find some absolutely humongous needles from out of nowhere to wreak revenge under the guise of "just a small injection of pain killer " to help you sleep tonight! DAMHIKT.

I was going to buy a chainsaw for collecting timber for my woodturning, but now I guess that it's back to these.
    Regards,
    Barry. ( Darkside timber gatherer.)

    Darren,

Sorry to hear of your incident. Hope you are well and turning pens again soon.

I'm with Soundman, 'cept I'll take it a step further, IMO chainsaws are the most dangerous hand held tool there is. Please take care with them. By the sounds, Darren has been lucky, so if his example saves the next one from losing a leg, it has at least served a purpose.

    Darren,

Good to hear that you're recovering. Experiences like this prove how dangerous playing with timber can be.

Sheesh!!! Yep, nothing worse than injuring yourself when someone just has to get your attention while you're working with a loud powertool. So glad you are ok Darren and getting better quickly.

    wishing you a speedy recovery

    cheers

Dan and Captain Chaos. I am with both of you. I consider getting a chainsaw but for me I am afraid of them and respect of a tool is one thing but fear dangerous so I won't go down that road. I saw what my brother leg was after his kick back, 20 years later and the tendon in his ankle has just let go again this time, they can't repair it. (and all he was doing was walking down a set of steps) That is why when I heard this had happened to Darren I was sick to tummy. They can make a mess and it not just for the now. He can come back much later to bite you.

Toni the saw is nothing to be affraid of, you use the lathe every day and it is just as dangerous if not more so. Saw an article on a guys site and a mate of his was using a new lathe and one photo you see him at the lathe the next photo you see him with his feet hanging out of the ceiling. He jammed the chisel in and it threw him. Don't let what happen to others rule what you believe you can and can't do. A mate has sharpened my saw for me while I have been in, I get out tomorrow and on Friday I have some native almond that is getting cut, by me. Mate I know how strong you really are so I know that you will overcome your fears. Your bro and I were unlucky but at the end of the day it was not the saws fault, it always comes down to human error. I don't mean you go and get a big Hussy and start slicing things up, but don't let a machine control your fears.

wow I did not know a lathe could do that.

Thanks Darren, but for me a saw is not the smart idea at this point, the fear matter is one side but If I had to I probably would overcome it. after I used it a couple of times. But the hugest reason at the moment I don't want a chain saw, I would have to take five kids to cut the wood. I would not be able to safely cut wood and watch kids so it be asking for a disaster to me or my kids. To easy to be distracted.
    bye

Well thank gawd Darrens improving and is on the mend and Sherries gonna survive

Thanks Toni... a very apt thread I think

Ive had a HEALTHY respect if not slight trepidation toward chainsaws since I was an ambo up in Derby back in the 80s... got a call out to Mawumjum one night to pick up a bloke who'd had a "slight" accident with a chainsaw (Mawumjum is an Aboriginal communty out from Derby a fair whack) So anyway off we tottle me the sexywexy nurse I was dating and the doc... ready for pretty much anything

We werent ready for what we came to... the bloke had been cutting "firewood" from the house... yep walls and all... just the old "ah buggarit I need some wood" out with an old beat up skihl and start cuttin

The chain came in contact with the powerline in the wall the blast threw him back across the room and the chain went straight through his head... seriously straight down from top to neck... he was dead some "slight accident" Ive seen another fella who lost an arm... to say a chain saw knows no difference between timber and flesh is wrong IT KNOWS flesh is soft bone is soft it knows ITS EASY!!

Since then Ive been pretty wary of these creatures... but now years later Ive bought one a real nice wee skihl farmboss... now Ive also got this future son-in-law a farmers son one of those know it all done it all types... good young fella mind just knows it all

He has this thing about chainsaws... loves them! so when we head out bush to get wood hes the chainsaw woodbutcher I sit back and watch with varying degrees of fear mixed with anxiety and worry... the kid simply has no bloody respect for the thing and is a "slight accident" waiting to happen... doesnt matter how many times I get wild at him and tell him to pull his flamin head in explain the dangers he just doesnt get it

Me? I MAKE damned sure theres at least another driver with me when I head out just in case I stop regularily I have breaks I wear eye and hearing protection I wear solid clothing (dont have any chaps but thats a great idea) and make sure everyone knows the rules of play before we do anything... any variations and its off machine pack up and gone...

Dont take kids under 14 with me either... I consider a 14 year old old enough to drive me at least to the road to meet an ambulance or to the hospital if need be under that it would just plain terrify them...

THERE ARE RULES!!! ABIDE THEM AND SURVIVE DONT AND YOU MIGHT LIVE TO REGRET IT

Good on yer Darren and Sherrie stay well and just care for each other till you recover
Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

Our woodturning club has a few members like that, Dingo.

When we're notified a tree is down and available to anyone who wants pieces, it's a case of "Swarm! Swarm!" as a mass of frantic clubmembers descend upon it in a free-wood frenzy.

Some of these blokes work with chainsaws as part of their daily jobs/etc. eg. SES members. They're interesting to watch; four or five them on the same tree, yet you can tell they're always aware of each other and what everyone is doing. Even with so many blokes, they keep a respectable distance as well. It's almost a slow motion dance.

But others... oh yes, the others... [shudder] You may see the SES crew working on one tree and one solitary bloke working on another. The bloke by himself might feel a bit lonesome, so he wanders over to join the others. Guaranteed, after finishing their current cuts, the SES boys will leave the new bloke to himself and move on to the tree he'd just abandoned.

Why? Well, one bloke I'm thinking of in particular will know you're next to him and want to say something. So he'll simply turn towards you chain-saw held out front and still revving madly, to have a natter. A few times he's barely missed me and I'm sure I'm not the only one. No accidents yet, but there's been a few brown pants moments and I'm damned sure it's only a matter of time...
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
